That’s a lot of Trash

While traveling in Japan, I noticed that Japan was very clean. The whole time I was wondering why it was so clean because it was hard to find trashcans. When I did find trash cans I noticed that each type of trash was sorted out into many kinds such as combustibles, bottles, plastic etc. We were expected to figure out what the type of trash was that we were throwing away which at times during my trip was hard to do. Earlier in the trip we had learned that it wasn’t custom to walk and eat. I figured that this was the reason why it was harder to find trash cans and why it was so clean in Japan. This is drastically different than the U.S where we find trash cans all over the place and the cities are rather dirty compared to Tokyo. Also, it is customary to walk and eat especially if you were walking to work or class. One thing I wondered while we were there was when there are trashcans, where does all the trash go? Fortunately, later in the trip we took a trip to an incineration plant in which we learned the exact thing I wondered. We learned about the landfills and how they sort all the trash that gets sent to them. We learned what types of trash they incinerate and what types they don’t along with how they transport the trash. We watched a video overviewing the whole trash program and we learned what they treat the trash with and where they treat it. We saw all the trash piled up and learned what would happen if something did not go according to plan. We also saw the camera video showing what was going at that time all over the plant. We saw the giant claw pick up trash along with the birds flying in and out of the trash area. We had someone as a tour guide as well. It was a very cool and interesting learning experience especially since Japan is so clean.
