Do I need VISA?

A visa is NOT necessary for US passport holders visiting Japan for a short-term stay of less than 90 days with the purpose of tourism and business. If you are an international student please check Visa information

What is the weather like in Japan?

You will travel around South to North. Northern part of Japan can be still chilly in May so bring a sweater will be a good idea. Also, in Southern part of Japan, rainy season will be started in late May so make sure bring an umbrella.

Where can I get Japanese money? (Japanese Yen, JPY)

In Japan, not many small local stores can accept a credit card payment. Please go to a bank or exchange counter at an airport to change your USD to JPY. You can withdraw cash from your US bank account using your ATM card at Japan Post Bank or Seven Eleven retail convenience store ATM machines. Where should I go for my free time in Tokyo?

Tokyo is a mega city. There are many places you can visit, Shibuya, Harajyuku, Akihabara,etc…
You should search online to make your free day more fun!!

Do I need to tip restaurant/taxi in Japan?

No, you do not need tipping in Japan.

I can not speak Japanese, how can I communicate with Japanese people?

Japanese have to learn English as their second language at school and most of them understand some easy words.
Try to talk with them or download some app into your phone to translate words into Japanese.

I would like to know grading plan for this course.

The course will be graded according to results from assignments, group project, and final report, as follows:

What should I wear when I participate in the program?

Please dress conservatively and avoid wearing very casual clothing (e.g., flip flops, athletic shorts, sweatpants) when visiting the University, hospitals, and other places in this program.

Can I use my phone/Wi-Fi in Japan?

There are many free Wi-Fi spots while you are traveling in Japan such as Tokyo metro stations. You can also get Wi-Fi service or rent phone in Japan. Docomo, Frets, Global Advanced communications, Ninja wifi, and Pururu have Wi-Fi access service and cell phone rental. Please check their web-sites for further information.

How to take transportation system in Japan?

You should not drive in Japan, especially in Tokyo. Most people use public transportation which is bus, train, and metro. They usually come very often sometime every 3 minutes in Tokyo. You can check the schedule online or at station. However, many of the transportation system will be packed during the rush after which is in morning between 7:30 – 8:30.
