Week 5 Update

The following information was sent out in an email on 2/7/17, and has been added to the events calendar. We will have a community meeting this Wednesday 6-7:30pm in Hagerty Hall 180. We will be playing team trivia for prizes as well as discussing the Leadership Council application process for the 2017-2018 academic year!


 Reflection on the President’s Executive Orders on Immigration (2 points)
TODAY, Monday, February 6, 4:00pm, Saxbe Auditorium, Drinko Hall
Alan C. Michaels, dean of Moritz College of Law, will moderate as professors David S. Bloomfield, Ruth Colker, Mohamed S. Helal, and Peter Shane (left) will speak in a panel-style conversation on President Trump’s recent executive orders on immigration. Bloomfield is an immigration law specialist. Helal is an international law scholar. Colker and Shane are scholars in constitutional law. The panel includes two Mershon affiliates: Helal, whose research sits at the intersection between public international law and international relations theory, and Shane, an authority on separation of powers who has organized conferences on cybersecurity and online democracy. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend. This event is sponsored by the Moritz College of Law.
How To Make an Impact Through Political Action (2 points)
Tuesday, February 7, 5:30-6:30pm, Kottman Hall 103
Join the Environment and Natural Resources Scholars as they host a fireside-style discussion on political action with Columbus City Council member Elizabeth Brown. We’ll explore some of the following questions and will have time for open discussion at the end: How can I actually influence my representatives? What’s the best way to stay up to date on issues that matter? What news sources are worth my time and money? What are the strengths of local politics and what are the best ways to get involved? What are the most pressing issues facing our city right now?

CCWA Signature Luncheon: Global Health – How China Impacts The World

Dr. Kim Cremers, a pharmacist, will be sharing pictures and tellThe Columbus Council On World Affairs is a leading nonpartisan, globally-focused organization in the Columbus Region. The Council fosters a community that is well-informed about critical international issues as they affect the world, nation, and local region. One of their signature programs is the Signature Lunch Series, which feature high-profile international speakers exploring a variety of global topics. This event brings together professionals from various fields throughout the city. IA has the opportunity to take a small group of students to this lunch which is an incredible learning and networking opportunity. The cost is $25 per person which IA would cover however, you must be completely sure you would be available before signing up because once we commit, you would be responsible for the $25 would you no longer be able to attend. A Closer Look at Homelessness in Columbus (2 points)
Thursday, February 16, 7:00pm, Taylor Tower Lobby
This program will be a collaboration between the OSU student organization, Crosswalk Outreach to the Homeless and Dr. Stephanie Moulton, of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. One of Crosswalk Outreach’s goals is to combat the stigmatization of people who are homeless by educating others and inviting them to learn with the club. This program will educate attendees about the bigger picture of poverty and homelessness, as well as introduce students to opportunities involving Crosswalk Outreach.
Taste of OSU (1 point)
Friday, February 17, 5:00-9:00pm, Ohio Union
Taste of OSU is an Ohio State signature event that brings together more than 50 student organizations that provide a night of international food, cultural performances, and exhibits to a crowd of about 4,000 attendees. All are invited to attend and entry to the event is free. Attendees can purchase (cash and BuckID only) $1 tickets to samples the array of international dishes prepared by the student organizations along with Student Life’s Dining Services chefs.
Scholars Bowling Night (1 point)
Wednesday, February 22, 9:00-11:45pm, Sequoia Pro Bowl
Along with PSL, Art, Humanities, STEM and Biological Sciences Scholars, we will be heading out for a night of bowling! Cost is $5 per person and space is limited. If you are interested in attending, please sign up here. Cost includes transportation, unlimited bowling for two hours, and shoes. Bus will be departing at 9:00pm and should return by 11:45pm. Space is very limited so please sign up ASAP to reserve your spot
Night at the Museum: Ohio History Center (2 points)
Saturday, February 25, 7:00-10:00pm
Here’s your chance to experience the Ohio History Center museum after hours and see whether or not our exhibits really do come to life!  Tickets will be $5.  We will meet in Smith-Steeb at 7pm to take a charter bus up to the Ohio History Center.  If you have any questions, please contact Doug (urbancsik.1@osu.edu).
