Week 4 Update

The following information was sent out in an email on 1/30/17, and has been added to the events calendar. There is no meeting this week, but we will have a community meeting next week, so please mark your calendars.


BuckeyeThon Fundraising Party (1 point)
TONIGHT, 7:00pm, Smith-Steeb
Elizabeth will be hosting a fundraising party in Smith-Steeb, Smith Side glass classroom (the back corner room). We will be emailing friends and family, so please bring email addresses. We will also be discussing some alternative forms of fundraising, such as canning. Please attend even if you’re not participating in BuckeyeThon because we would love to have as many students there as possible contacting friends and family. BuckeyeThon raises money to help treat pediatric cancer patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital here in Columbus. Currently the IA team has raised over $4,000, and we are aiming to raise another $1,500. *correction from BuckeyeThon team email – please turn in t-shirt money to Brandon Hofacker or Aziza Genglik in Smith-Steeb instead of the front desk.
IA Movie Night: Invictus (1 point)

Come join us for an IA movie night!  We will have a quick conversation after the movie to discuss ideas and themes from the movie. Popcorn and other snacks will also be provided!
Engineers Without Borders: Sustainable Service Abroad (2 points)
Thursday, February 2, 6:00-7:00pm, Smith-Steeb glass classroom
Interested in study or service abroad? This event hosted by Engineers without Borders is a short presentation about how to find sustainable impacts when completing service abroad. We will also briefly discuss the international service business and its impact around the world. Students will also give brief testimonials about their own service abroad.
Gallery Hop in the Short North (2 points)

Come join other IA Scholars on a quick trip down to the Short North during the Gallery Hop to explore the art and soul of Columbus. We will meet in the Smith-Steeb lobby at 7pm and head down to the Short North together on the COTA. Email Doug (urbancsik.1) if you have any questions.
5th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration (2 points)

Get ready for our biggest event of the year! The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in Chinese culture, so we intend to celebrate it thoroughly by putting on a great show! The Chinese American Student Association, Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc., Asian Business Student Association, and Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. have all worked long and hard to bring you all this FREE Chinese New Year Show. We will have many various acts lined up including a surprise youtube guest! This is one show that you will not want to miss!!
There will be many raffles throughout the night. We have some great prizes lined up, so make sure to stay until the end!!
Ring in the Year of the Rooster with us to celebrate another year of luck, prosperity, and joy!
Doctors Without Borders with Dr. Kim Cremers (2 points)

Dr. Kim Cremers, a pharmacist, will be sharing pictures and telling her story of her experiences across the globe with Doctor’s Without Borders. Food* will be provided!
CCWA Signature Luncheon: Global Health – How China Impacts The World

Dr. Kim Cremers, a pharmacist, will be sharing pictures and tellThe Columbus Council On World Affairs is a leading nonpartisan, globally-focused organization in the Columbus Region. The Council fosters a community that is well-informed about critical international issues as they affect the world, nation, and local region. One of their signature programs is the Signature Lunch Series, which feature high-profile international speakers exploring a variety of global topics. This event brings together professionals from various fields throughout the city. IA has the opportunity to take a small group of students to this lunch which is an incredible learning and networking opportunity. The cost is $25 per person which IA would cover however, you must be completely sure you would be available before signing up because once we commit, you would be responsible for the $25 would you no longer be able to attend. Taste of OSU (1 point)
Friday, February 17, 5:00-9:00pm, Ohio Union
Taste of OSU is an Ohio State signature event that brings together more than 50 student organizations that provide a night of international food, cultural performances, and exhibits to a crowd of about 4,000 attendees. All are invited to attend and entry to the event is free. Attendees can purchase (cash and BuckID only) $1 tickets to samples the array of international dishes prepared by the student organizations along with Student Life’s Dining Services chefs.

A Day in the Life (3 points)

Day in the Life of a Buckeye is a program that offers a one-on-one experience for inner city and Appalachian area high school sophomores and juniors [and seniors who have been accepted to the Columbus campus] to experience life at The Ohio State University, and college in general, for a day. Visiting school districts include the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Columbus City Schools, and Warrensville Heights School District. This visit, hosted by currently enrolled undergraduate & graduate students, often include attending classes, interacting with faculty and staff, eating in campus-area dining facilities, visiting the library and recreational facilities, attending student group meetings, and seeing a residence hall room. The 5th Annual A Day in the Life of a Buckeye event will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 and applications are now open until February 5, 2017.
