Ohio State’s campus has a large population of international students and this results in a large amount of interaction between domestic and international students. Being united as Buckeyes, it is important that students have a global view and understanding of different cultures. That being said, internationalization at Ohio State is important for growing as a community and family.
How does GLI prepare you to become a future leader in our global community?
The world is ever growing into a more collaborative environment. GLI prepares use to be leaders in the globalized environment by teaching us not only about leadership but how to implement leadership amongst a diverse range of people and a diverse environment.

When I first came to The Ohio State University, I made many international friends. By spending time with them, I had the great opportunity to value different cultures, understand different ideas and gain new perspectives. Diversifying my friend group allowed me to rethink ideas I had taken for granted. However several months later, I saw the difficulty international students were having connecting with the domestic students and vice versa. Through my experiences in GLI, I want to help international and domestic students connect better so that these two diverse groups can share the amazing experiences I have had at OSU.

My major is Finance, and I am seriously considering consulting as my career path. The job would not only require me to physically travel globally, but require me to think in an international way as the world economy is becoming more and more inter-dependent. Internationalization at Ohio State will prepare me to interact with people of different backgrounds, broaden my horizon and bring me closer to my future success. Also, internationalization will further increase the status of international students, making it more convenient for me to leave a mark.
How does GLI prepare you to become a future leader in our global community?
By pairing me with a domestic student, I can start my journey of becoming a global leader via deeper communication with my partner. And since there are other students from different countries, I will be able to learn about the conditions – both life and work – from them through weekly meetings and maybe dinner or lunch. And that is the information which is much more accurate and valuable. It will help me fulfill my bag of knowledge as well as strengthen my ability to deal with complex problems with international components.

Through our introduction and marketing, I believed that more and more international and domestic students would be willing to spend more time to communicate with each other. The number of international students is increasing on campus, but they are hard to really get involved in American culture, let alone make an impact in the Ohio State. Internationalization never means the increasing number of international students, but the change of students’ perspectives to cultural difference. GLI is first step for us to get to know American culture and also let domestic students connect with international students. It is our responsibility to affect people around us and really make internationalization works at Ohio State.
How does GLI prepare you to become a future leader in our global community?
As globalization developed, a future leader tends to work in a global community. To be a good leader in global environment, communicating with people from different cultures is a crucial skill. Being a GLI member, I am able to talk to people around the world and know their culture. The weekly communication will help me better get involved in various cultures. This specific experience will help me to understand deeply the cultural difference and then lead a team with people around world by connecting with them with an open heart.
How would other students benefit from programs like GLI?
At first, GLI’s weekly meeting is beneficial by talking to guest speakers. Each meeting has a specific theme, which is set specially for students to improve themselves by a series of cultivation, from individual evaluation to group work and final cross-countries’ cooperation. Secondly, GLI’s weekly meeting lets every student in this program gets to know each other very well. What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming year with GLI?
For the excited upcoming year with GLI, I do expect that I can see the evident improvement on myself, not only the personal development, like self-evaluation, confidence, and public speech skill, but also the skills to communicate among people from different culture.
