With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

I am being considerate of others personal space by distancing myself at least 6ft. I am also wearing a mask in all public spaces. I also make it known to others that I am available if they wants to talk about the pandemic or about any other global issues.

How do you think GLI can contribute to your future professional career?

GLI can contribute to my professional career through networking opportunities, leadership development, and project management. All of these skills will make me a competitive individual when pursuing a professional career.

What song/movie best represents your background and why?

The song that best represents my background is “You’re gonna be ok” by Jenn Johnson. I faced a lot of challenges when I was little but through those experiences, I was able to persevere and become a stronger individual because of it, which is what this song is all about. The past experiences I went through are a big part of making me the person I am today.

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

I have been educating myself on how COVID-19 has impacted the world, and I have been strictly following the guidelines to protect people around me.

How do you think GLI can contribute to your future professional career?

GLI has helped me make a habit of seeking out diversity in perspectives. I have had many inspirational conversations with our cohort members and guest speakers from different cultural backgrounds. These conversations opened me up to new information and knowledge and helped me recognize and respect “ways of beings” that are different from my own cultural background.

What song/movie best represents your background and why?

Forrest Gump. It doesn’t necessarily represent my cultural background but I think it’s one of the best movies of all time. I want to be someone that never gives up and makes the best of things regardless of the circumstances.

Luke Ciminillo Delamotte

With kindness.

I am very passionate about city planning. How a city is designed and how it functions can have a large impact on the quality of life of its inhabitants.

I see myself having a good job, one that pays more than 70k a year, and has had many experiences around the world.

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

For me, caring for others right now has meant extending empathy and understanding. While working toward progress and change are definitely at the front of my mind I’ve also tried to just exist with others in the moment. JOY during such trying times is a radical pursuit for us all, so I try to find opportunities to experience it with others in my life.

To be globally-minded it’s to be intersectional in one’s work and advocacy by realizing that all struggles are interconnected. By leading in such a manner you work to uplift all people together by empowering them in their own missions and collaborating when you can.

I’d love to be doing nonprofit work at the intersection of feminism and interfaith dialogue. I’d love to help bridge the gap between feminists and religious communities to develop better women’s rights policies.

Sarah Homan

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

I am caring for others as a global leader by being intentional with my time I spend with my friends and family. Whether it is a phone call, Zoom group call or hanging out at the park I have prioritized being in community with others because it is so precious these days.

I would use the word “open” to describe GLI. Never for a moment did I feel like I had to put on an act or try and impress others in the group. Everyone truly was so open to just get to know one another.

The song As by Stevie Wonder best describes me. He sings of both the deep love for family and friends while also looking at how the future can be shaped by our actions today. “As today I know I’m living but tomorrow Could make me the past but that I mustn’t fear For I’ll know deep in my mind The love of me I’ve left behind ‘Cause I’ll be loving you always”.

Ruby Im

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

With the state of the world right now, I try my best to educate myself and others to be considerate of the tensions and problems arising in the community. By being a student leader, I hope to have a positive impact on my peers through listening and providing support when needed.

GLI provides a variety of opportunities that aid in networking, communication, and leadership. The weekly meetings and monthly dinners specifically have been an honorable experience talking with a multitude of professions as well as backgrounds. In the medical field specifically, I feel that we as healthcare workers need to be more open-minded about the cultural differences of all people. My experiences with GLI and adopting a global mindset will allow me to better understand working with others and maintaining those relationships.

To be globally-minded is to be curious and be open to different perspectives. It’s about understanding all kinds of people and being compassionate. Especially in a team or work environment, it is a necessity to respect those ideas and a variety of backgrounds. Ultimately, the world is global and that is why adopting this mindset is so important for the community.

Jennifer Iroh

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

The current state of the world has taught me how important it is to stay informed as it’s crucial to know about what’s going on in the world but then to draw opinions from credible information. Also showing empathy and care for others, as that often lacking in the States because the individualism was highly exposed during the pandemic. Overall, it taught me that nothing is guaranteed so it’s important to take advantage of every opportunity and follow your own personal goals as you never know when it could be taken away from you.

A word I would use to describe GLI would be stories. We all come from all walks of life with unique perspectives and ideals, GLI has pushed me to learn more about the world and other people’s experiences as they greatly differ from my own. It’s allowed me to be a better person overall by always thinking of those not included or who may not be heard. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made joining a cohort of amazingly beautiful people who are willing to put themselves out there.

Something I’m extremely passionate about is weight-lifting or bodybuilding. I love to train as my time for myself before getting started with my other responsibilities for the day. I love love to push myself and lift more than I think I can. To try out new things and push what I thought I can do is one of the most gratifying feelings. Also the endorphins help! 🙂

Kiran Kaur

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many people’s lives and so it is important to be mindful of others. It is critical to play your role in ensuring the safety of others, and I have done so by abiding by the mandates and taking my own precautions. As racial tensions have heightened, I feel it is critical to not only be educated about the injustices, but also to take action to address them, whether through protesting, donating, supporting POC businesses, and so on. And, while I’ve talked about racial tensions, there are many other social issues that need to be addressed, so it’s crucial to educate yourself on other topics that affect our communities as well.

3 Idiots is a Hindi film about three strangers who come together and learn about the world while dealing with their personal struggles. It’s my all-time favorite film and the one that most portrays who I am. It serves as a reminder that living in a fast-paced society, when life feels like a race, sometimes you have to reassure yourself, “All is well” and have faith in your aspirations.

Maggie Leneghan

With the current state of the world (the COVID-19 pandemic, political challenges, racial tension and more) how are you caring for others as a global leader?

I am doing regular virtual check-ins with friends and other people I know and have increased scheduled time to do calls. It’s important we all stay in touch and socialized so I want to help with that.

I think a globally-minded leader is someone who considers the backgrounds and cultures of all people involved in a situation and decision-making process and includes that knowledge in making decisions or understanding their peers.
