The Gillespie Laboratory was launched in 2017 by Dr. Shannon L. Gillespie, PhD, RN, a clinical and translational nurse scientist. Dr. Gillespie has clinical expertise in maternal-infant health and research expertise in clinical and translational psychoneuroendocrinology and psychoneuroimmunology. The laboratory is one of several maternal-infant research laboratories (MIRLs) housed in the Martha S. Pitzer Center for Women, Children and Youth (CWCY) and operates in conjunction with the Translational Biosciences Laboratory (TBL) of the College of Nursing at the Ohio State University.
Vision: We are a leader in maternal-infant research, with special emphasis on clinical and translational psychoneuroendocrinology and psychoneuroimmunology.
In other words, we determine if and how social and psychological determinants affect the endocrine and immune systems in ways that are meaningful to maternal-infant health. We use this information to design new ways to deliver the best possible maternal-infant healthcare.
Mission: We aim to save the lives of mothers and infants by discovering and championing models of maternal-infant healthcare that are tailored toward the diverse social, psychological, and biological needs of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum individuals.
In other words, we aim to save the lives of mothers and infants by ensuring that healthcare models recognize and meet the needs of every expectant and new mother, representing a major shift away from the current “one-size-fits-all” approach to maternal-infant healthcare.
Core Values: We Live KIND. K – We are kind to ourselves and others. I – We create and share innovative solutions. N – We nurture our strengths. D – Together, we do the impossible.
