The Gillespie Laboratory was launched in 2017 by Dr. Shannon L. Gillespie, PhD, RN, a clinical and translational nurse scientist. The laboratory is one of several maternal-infant research laboratories (MIRLs) housed in the Martha S. Pitzer Center for Women, Children and Youth (CWCY) and operates in conjunction with the Translational Biosciences Laboratory (TBL) of the College of Nursing at the Ohio State University.

Vision: The Gillespie Laboratory is a leader in transdisciplinary clinical and translational maternal-infant research, with special emphasis on identifying and addressing the social and psychological determinants of maternal-infant health.

In other words, we lead diverse teams with the goal of understanding how our experiences “get under the skin” in ways that are important to health and using this information to provide better clinical and supportive healthcare to expectant and new mothers and their infants.

Mission: The Gillespie Laboratory aims to improve health and transform lives by discovering, testing, and championing innovative, biologically-informed approaches to prenatal and postpartum healthcare.

In other words, we discover new ways to provide exceptional healthcare to expectant and new mothers and their infants and work integrate these approaches into clinical settings.
