Strauss Studio Internship

Project Statement

This project includes work from my internship at a Canton-based interior design studio called Strauss Studio. I began my internship here during the summer before my senior year of high school and have worked there ever since. My responsibilities are different day to day but typically, I’ll help with material sourcing and client assistance. This involves me visiting local design stores in search of specific types of tile, fabric, flooring, paint, etc, and attending client meetings to present said findings. Beyond this, I also greatly help with product photography, editing, and sketching. While photography and sketching are straightforward, the editing side of things can vary from simply enhancing a product’s color to completely changing it to reflect different wood colors or textures. Lastly, this past summer I helped the studio start the process of rebranding its logo. While I wasn’t the designer who created the final version, I created several versions and applications of simple ones that pushed them in the direction toward their current one now.

Reflection

During the summer of 2020, I was halfway through my high school graphic design program and fully convinced that was the profession I wanted to pursue in the future. While I still love that kind of design, my mind has slightly changed since then and it’s because of this internship. Beyond giving me a glance at what life as an interior designer could look like, these past two years have taught me so many valuable skills and allowed me to harness old ones in new ways. I’ve learned all about the world of tactile design and what it takes to appropriately design a space from floor to ceilings. Through this, my knowledge of color relationships and how they relate to the mood perceived within a space have strengthened greatly. I’ve also been able to strengthen my sketching, photography, and photoshop skills through real-world applications. On a more personal level, I’ve additionally strengthened my confidence and presentation skills through talking to clients and being able to accurately speak about product details. This summer will most likely be my last summer working here, but I intend on getting the most out of it by learning the program Sketchup and continuing to sell products and build my own individual client base.
