About

Hi! My name is Abby Fricke and I’m a first-year student at The Ohio State University. I’m currently in the foundations program, with hopes of majoring in interior design and minoring in communication technology and sustainability. Although I’m new to the design scene here at OSU, my experience in this field began many years ago. Throughout high school, I managed an internship at a design studio while taking many design-related classes such as photography, AP art, and a two-year graphic design program. The skills I cultivated here really sparked a sense of creativity inside me and influenced me to pursue a design major.

Noteworthy Information:

  • I’m the upcoming design editor for OSU’s student newspaper, The Lantern.
  • I recently started an internship at Elevate Creative, a Columbus-based company that deals with branding, videography, 3D modeling, and more.
  • I’ve worked for the past two years at an interior design studio in Canton, Ohio called Strauss Studio.
  • I worked for three years as a wedding photographer assistant and second shooter.
  • I’m Adobe certified in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • I placed third nationally in Business Professionals of America, a business and visual communication design-related competition.

What is Design?

Design is everywhere and everything; it’s the car you drive to work and the cup you drink your coffee out of every morning. It’s the sound your phone makes when you get a notification and even the website you’re viewing right now. In simpler terms, nonetheless, design is merely the process of how anything comes to be in its final form. This process is thought-provoking, innovative, utterly creative, and because of that, often very difficult. However, when done the right way, design has the ability to bring a community together, spark insightful conversation, and even, inspire other people to take a risk and design something themselves.

What am I most excited for?

As far as this program goes, I’m utterly excited to push my creative limits, try out new techniques (and, refine old ones), collaborate with other talented students, and all-around further my knowledge about design. Beyond that, I’m especially looking forward to seeing how all the worlds of visual communication design, industrial design, and interior design collide and overlap with one another. As someone who has experience with visual communication design and interior design, I often struggle with trying to concisely decide which I like more and want to pursue. Thus, it’ll be interesting to see what qualities, skills, and professions they have in common and how I want to incorporate them into my future beyond Ohio State.
