Earlier this week, we had an opportunity to work with Dr. Susan Barrett, Dr. Adam Rudinsky, and Joelle Nielsen, MSW, to record authentic teaching scenarios that current VME III students will use as part of their clinical orientation. We were not only able to capture the footage that we needed, but the experience also prompted many creative ideas for multimedia that the faculty members can incorporate into their courses.
“For procedural skills such as working with clients on end-of-life care, I feel it’s important for us for provide students with an actual conversation, because the majority of them will have to have such conversations when they graduate into practice.” – Joelle Nielsen, MSW
The recording was done at the Digital Union (DU) at Denney Hall. The One Button Video Recording Studio has been updated recently and features capabilities such as multi-cam recording (to use for conversation/interview videos), high-sensitivity microphones, a green screen, and picture-in-picture (ex. similar to our lecture capture).
The Denney DU recording studio also features the Lightboard, which lets you incorporate whiteboard-drawing in your lectures, but without the awkwardness of having your back to the camera.
Of course, many capture-worthy moments can’t necessarily be brought into the studio, nor do they require an elaborate set up. To give you some ideas, here are some recent examples right here at the CVM:
- Video announcements and/or comments in CarmenCanvas using a built-in or an external webcam
- Recording tour of facility for off-site rotation experiences using an iPad
- Recording clinical techniques videos using a mobile device
- Flexible lecture capture using a webcam and CarmenConnect
- On-location photo/video shoots using a Padcaster with iPad
For more information, we have posted additional ideas in this post: Enhance Learning Experiences with Multimedia.
The possibilities are endless, and we would love to consult with you if you have any ideas!
