What are the Protective Actions the Public Can Take to Reduce Exposures?

There are several actions you can take to reduce the likelihood you are exposed to prescribed burn smoke, and to minimize any health impacts if you are unable to completely avoid smoke exposure. The actions below can help you limit exposure to smoke from prescribed burns.

  • When possible, stay indoors.
  • In the event that smoke impacts local air quality, reduce time spent outdoors.
  • Close windows and doors.
  • Use air purifiers or ensure your heating and cooling system has a high-efficiency air filter (HEPA) to clean indoor air.
  • Wear a properly fitted N-95 mask if working outdoors.
  • If driving is required, turn on your lowlights and drive slowly through smoky areas.
