If a community is more than 10 miles away from a prescribed burn, and there is no indication of visible smoke by the community, then health risk communications are optional. However, continuous monitoring is critical, and if the community does experience smoke exposure from a prescribed burn, health departments or similar agencies should be communicating to the public.
