Song Bird Program Offered on May 18th at the Vinton Furnace State Forest

Would you like to know more about the songbirds living in your woods? “Song Birds”, a BONUS Saturday of the “2nd Friday Series” program of 2013, is designed to help you:
◾Learn to identify common forest birds by sight and song
◾Understand habitat requirements of many woodland song birds
◾Spend a day in the woods with an experienced birder

“Song Birds” and the “2nd Friday Series” are sponsored by the Education and Demonstration Subcommittee of the Vinton Furnace State Experimental Forest with support from the ODNR-Divisions of Forestry and Wildlife, US Forest Service, Vinton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ohio State University Extension, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Hocking College, the National Wild Turkey Federation and Glatfelter.

“Song Birds”, will take place at the Vinton Furnace State Experimental Forest, near McArthur, on May 18th from 8 am to 2:30 pm. More than 90 bird species have been documented at the Vinton Furnace State Forest in recent years. A registration fee of $10 will include lunch and program materials.     8:15 Break into bird groups and visit various areas of the forest
    9:30 Switch groups snack/water break
    9:45 Bird with opposite group
    11:00 Lunch
    11:45 Birding terminology/bird count down: Lindsay
    12:00 Birding by ear: Katrina Schultes
    12:30 Stewardship for Birds: Bob Placier: Power Point presentation on the threats to forest
    interior bird species and birds of conservation concern. There will be emphasis on the cerulean
    population here and how important Ohio’s population is to the entire range-wide
    population.
    1:00 Break
    1:05 Managing Forest Birds: Amanda Conover: Information on the new publication: Managing Forest Birds in Southeast Ohio: A Guide for Land Managers. She will also discuss OBCI as well as the lights out Columbus.
    1:45 Human-caused threats to birds: Jenny: Specifically the impact of feral cats as well as the threats posed by the energy industry: wind power and open pits from oil and gas production.
