“Edible and Medicinal Plants” program offered to woodland owners and enthusiasts in SE Ohio at the Vinton Furnace State Forest on Friday, May 9.

DSCN0148Southeastern Ohio’s woodlands contain a wide assortment of plants ranging from majestic oaks to the most delicate understory herbs.  Many of these plants are edible or have medical properties.  On Friday, May 9, Rebecca Wood will lead “Edible and Medicinal Plants”, an educational program designed to help you:

 · Learn to identify many of the edible and medicinal plants found in SE  Ohio

· Understand the ecology of these plants

· Become familiar with the many resources available to help you further understand  the nutritional and medicinal value of these plants

· Explore edible and medicinal plants at Vinton Furnace State Forest

 Rebecca Wood is an herbalist and ethnobotanist.  She recently retired from HockingCollege where she taught a variety of classes including field botany, plant identification and herbal studies.  “Edible and Medical Plants” and the “Day in the Woods-2nd Friday Series” are sponsored by the Education and Demonstration Subcommittee of the Vinton Furnace State Forest with support from the ODNR-Divisions of Forestry and Wildlife, US Forest Service, Vinton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ohio State University Extension, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Wild Turkey Federation, Hocking College and Glatfelter.
