Maps are valuable tools that help woodland owners enjoy and manage their properties. Maps can be used for a variety of purposes from locating favorite mushroom and turkey hunting spots to documenting management activities in woodlands. “Creating and Using Woodland Maps”, an educational program designed to enhance the ability to use and create woodland maps, will be offered at the Vinton Furnace State Forest on Friday, September 13. Participants in this program will:
• Explore information that can be gleaned from topographical maps
• Enhance their ability to use a compass, pacing and maps to navigate
• Learn to use Google Earth and other readily available software to create maps of their woodland resources
• Understand the capabilities of GPS (Global Positioning Systems) for navigation and mapping woodlands
• Learn where to acquire topographic maps and aerial imagery of their property
“Creating and Using Woodland Maps” and the “2nd Friday Series” are sponsored by the Education and Demonstration Subcommittee of the Vinton Furnace State Forest with support from the ODNR-divisions of Forestry and Wildlife, US Forest Service, Vinton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ohio State University Extension, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Wild Turkey Federation, Hocking College, and Glatfelter.

Note: The Vinton Furnace State Forest is a 16,000 acre property with no postal delivery within its borders. If using a GPS the best address that we have found is:
35700 Ball Diamond Rd., Dundas, OH 45634.
Since it is so remote, we place bright yellow signs at both entrances to the forest and at every intersection that you pass on your way in. The journey is long, but it is well worth it!!
