An educational program “The Basics of Oak Regeneration” will be offered on August 9 at the Vinton Furnace State Forest, near McArthur from 9 am to 3:30 pm.
This program is designed to help woodland owners understand the ecological and economic importance of oak in SE Ohio and to provide them with information on how they can better manage their oak woodlands. Participants will have the opportunity to visit a variety of sites which demonstrate how timber harvesting, herbicides and prescribed fire can be used to enhance oak regeneration.
Oaks are an important part of the forests of southeastern Ohio. They are the dominant trees in many of our woodlands, and they provide a wide variety of benefits from timber, which is critical to our economy, to acorns, which provide food for a wide variety of wildlife species. Yet, there has been a disturbing trend in recent years. Oaks are steadily being replaced by other tree species which may not provide many of the same benefits.
“The Basics of Oak Regeneration” and the “2nd Friday Series” are sponsored by the Education and Demonstration Subcommittee of the Vinton Furnace State Forest with support from the ODNR-divisions of Forestry and Wildlife, US Forest Service, Vinton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ohio State University Extension, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Wild Turkey Federation, Hocking College, and Glatfelter.
