Help Needed during the 2018 Ohio State Fair

Dear Ohio 4-H Supporter,

The Ohio State Fair is quickly approaching, and we hope you will consider volunteering as a skillathon facilitator. The skillathons are the largest program we coordinate at the state fair with more than 1,300 youth participating in nine species skillathons last year. The success of the program is dependent upon the generous time provided by you – our volunteer facilitators!

We hope you might assist us with one or more of the skillathons. The skillathon species include: beef, sheep, swine, dairy, horse, goat, poultry, dog, and rabbit. Please click on the following link and complete the survey to indicate your availability and interest: https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eDq6ouGJTxT4qQR

Volunteers for the skillathons are responsible for facilitating a station. A station requires youth to perform a series of tasks to test their knowledge about a subject related to the species. Facilitators are not required to have broad experience or knowledge about the species; however, we are seeking volunteers who enjoy working with youth from ages 8/9 to 18 years old and have some knowledge about animals.

If you agree to volunteer, we will send a follow-up letter in July with parking and admission passes, as well as additional facilitator information.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 614.247.8305 (office) or simply reply to this email. Thank you for considering.

Sincerely,

Dustin Homan

Program Manager, 4-H Special Projects

2018 Ohio State Fair Changes (Livestock)

Summary of Rule Changes for the Ohio State Fair:

  • Skillathons: No tiebreaker (5th) station; youth will progress through four stations evaluating their knowledge and skills in various topics.
  • Record books (beef, goat, poultry, swine, & sheep Skillathons only): Up to 10 additional sheets may be placed either before or after the intact project and record books at the youth’s discretion.
  • Outstanding Market Exhibitor (OME): Slight change in the tiebreaker rules. Previous tiebreaker relied almost exclusively on a youth’s Skillathon score; new tiebreaker uses their scores from record book judging, showmanship, and live animal placing.
  • Livestock Judging Contest:
    • Removed non-reasons division; now only junior and senior divisions for individuals and teams.
    • Entry fee now $10/contestant, but includes a fair pass if you register before Friday, July 13.
    • Juniors place eight classes, answer four sets of questions, and can participate in an optional oral reasons contest with separate awards.
    • Seniors will place eight classes and four sets of oral reasons.
    • New procedure for selecting the team to represent Ohio 4-H at the National Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, KY.
