Shooting Sports Instructor Fall Workshop – November 5-7, 2021

The registration for the Fall Shooting Sports Workshop November 5-7th, at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp is now live!  Information can be found on the state website here: https://ohio4h.org/families/members/events-opportunties/shooting-sports/state-training.  The direct go-link to the Qualtrics registration is: http://go.osu.edu/shootingsportsworkshop

A few things to note:

  • The registration process has been updated to an online registration. Participants will be able to pay via credit card (NelNet) or by mailing a check.
    • If mailing a check, please make sure they follow the instructions and include a list of participants. We know sometimes a 4-H Committee/Club etc. will pay for multiple people and so we need to be able to track who has paid.
  • All instructors are required to complete the National Shooting Sports online eModules prior to attending the workshop. They are being directed to contact their county 4-H professional on how to complete those modules. As of now, these only need to be completed one time.
    • If no one from your office is set up as a county manager for the online modules, contact Jeff Dick for assistance in setting up your account. You will be able to see your county, who has registered, progress made, etc.
    • Attached are instructions for how to access the modules which can be found at: 4-hshootingsportscollege.com
      • There currently is funding from ODNR to cover the cost of these modules. Instructors can use this code: OSUVYQSFQUM2
        • Please do not post the code on a website, but share with individual instructors directly.
  • Junior Leaders (teens who have previously completed the discipline in the county) are eligible to attend. They will need to ensure that they complete the JL application in addition to the workshop application. The JL application can be found on the state website link above. It is a paper form that is mailed to Jeff Dick and requires a 4-H professional signature at the bottom. JLs are expected to have a mentor in the discipline attend with them and an adult of the same gender who is staying in the cabin with them as a mentor also. These do not have to be the same person or from the same county. If this is the JL’s first time attending a workshop, two letters of reference are also required.
  • After registration closes, we will confirm the list of attendees with county 4-H professionals to ensure that they are approved, screened volunteers.

2021 Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Camp Counselors Needed

Shooting Sports experience is not required to be a camp counselor at shooting sports camp. We just need them to be GREAT camp counselors. For Junior Camp, we follow the 14 as of Jan. 1st guidelines. For Senior Camp, we ask that they be 18 as of Jan. 1st, which is a great opportunity for alumni who you would like to recruit back into your county program as volunteers or those camp counselors who just want to keep going to camp! This might be a great option for those who aged out last year and didn’t get that last year at camp.

How does this work? They will apply online via Qualtrics and it is explained in the application they need to communicate with their county 4-H professional about training; they even have to sign off specifically on this. I will then follow-up with you on different points. One to let you know they applied, two to get a reference, and three to confirm they have completed the training to your satisfaction. Would you let them be a camp counselor for you? Yes? GREAT!  Then they come into camp the night before campers and I do some onsite training with them. For alumni, they will need to go through the volunteer process in addition to applying to be a counselor, and completing additional training requirements to serve in this role.

The direct link to the counselor application is: http://go.osu.edu/shootingsportscounselor

The application can also be found on the state website here: https://ohio4h.org/families/members/events-opportunties/shooting-sports/4-h-shooting-ed-camp

The deadline to apply is March 1st!

Camps are held at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp and are scheduled for:

Junior Shooting Sports: June 25-27 (counselors arrive evening of the 24)

Senior Shooting Sports: July 18-23 (counselors arrive evening of the 17)

2018 Air Pistol League

Summer is rolling to an end and it is time to get ready for the indoor air pistol season.  We will be kicking off our league the week after Labor Day weekend on Tuesday, September 11th.   Ricks Sporting Goods located at 1326 Newark Rd in Mount Vernon has graciously allowed us to use their archery range and our portable pellet trap.  There is a flyer attached that covers more detailed information on the league.  Please pass it on to anyone who may have interest, we are particularly interested in attracting youth into the sport.

With best regards,

Camp Counselors Needed for Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Camps

We are looking for great camp counselors. Shooting Sports experience is not required!

Junior Shooting Sports Camp is June 28-July 1st (campers arrive on the 29th) at Canter’s Cave. Youth must be at least 14 years old as of January 1, 2018. Youth must complete all required training. If a youth is not a counselor in your county but interested, we do have a training opportunity April 20-22nd at the adult instructor workshop. We have also had some youth who were not available for county camps complete training in the county at the discretion of the 4-H professional (great option for those who live further away!). If youth are a counselor in your county, they do need to fill out an application but will not be required to attend any additional training.

Senior Shooting Sports Camp is July 7th-13th (campers arrive on the 8th) at Canter’s Cave. Counselors must be at least 18 as of January 1, 2018 and not attending SS camp as a camper. This is a great way to keep young alumni who have recently aged out involved! For alumni, a great system has been to have them go through volunteer screening in the county. You recruit a young volunteer and we get some great camp counselors! Training is available April 20-22nd for these individuals also.

The application is on the website here: https://ohio4h.org/families/members/events-opportunties/shooting-sports/4-h-shooting-ed-camp and is due to me by March 15th.
