Ohio Cattlemen’s Stockmanship Educational Opportunity

The stockmanship division of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) BEST program promotes education of our youth by expanding participants’ knowledge of the beef industry. It provides youth with an opportunity to showcase their abilities and talents outside of the show ring.

What is it?  The Stockmanship division of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s BEST program provides a pathway for youth to participate in the BEST program without showing an animal. It expands BEST participants’ knowledge of the beef industry and provides youth with an opportunity to showcase their abilities and talents outside of the show ring.

Who can participate?  This division of the BEST program is open to all Ohio youth. If an existing BEST participant would like to sign up for the Stockmanship division, they will do so under their BEST user profile at best.ohiocattle.org for no additional cost outside of existing cattle nominations.

How to start?  If age-eligible individuals would like to participate in the Stockmanship division, but don’t have cattle enrolled in the 2021-2022 BEST program, they should create their username
and profile at best.ohiocattle.org and select to participate in the Stockmanship division. Non-cattle exhibiting BEST Stockmanship participants must have a current $75 family OCA membership and will pay a one-time participation fee of $60.  Individuals may sign up for the Stockmanship program at any point throughout the season.

CONTEST SIGN-UP WILL BEGIN DEC. 1, 2021.

Points & Awards: Stockmanship contests will include their own registration and rules for each event and top-placing awards will be presented at each competition. Overall Stockmanship awards will be presented at the OCA BEST Awards Banquet on May 7, 2022.  The top five individuals in the following divisions will be recognized: Beginner, Junior, Novice, Intermediate and Senior.
Age breaks will follow that of the BEST program’s  showmanship rules.  To qualify for the end-of-year Stockmanship awards, the participant must have completed two contests, be a current
OCA member by January 1, 2022, or at the time of Stockmanship sign-up and have completed their Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification.  Stockmanship participants may complete their BQA at any session offered at a BEST sanctioned show, online at BQA.org or at YQCA.org.  A cumulative points scale for the Stockmanship division will be utilized for overall finishes and end-of-year point tabulation.  More information on the year-end Stockmanship points is included in the BEST rules and more details on each Stockmanship contest is available at www.ohiocattle.org

RE:                   2018 STEER / HEIFER WEIGH-IN SCHEDULE & PROCEDURES

All steers and heifers (including Delaware, Knox & Licking Counties) that may be exhibited during the 2018 Hartford Junior Fair Market Steer & Heifer show must be marked by ear tag and tattoo on SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 2018, at the Hartford fairgrounds (Grubb Arena – West End / Enter Gate C) between 9 a.m. and noon. Up to four (4) steers or heifers can be tagged for the Hartford Fair per exhibitor.

SPECIAL NOTE: We would encourage exhibitors and their families to be aware that we are utilizing a new scale location this year (Grubb Arena – West End), and we ask that you be attentive to the new traffic pattern and unloading/loading procedures. As always, we ask that steers be haltered and broke to lead, for the safety of all involved.

Tagging fee is $1.00 per tagged animal. Exhibitors must complete a registration card for each animal, which requires the exhibitor’s signature. If the exhibitor will be unable to attend weigh-in procedures, please stop by the Licking County Extension Office and pick up the registration card(s) to be signed by exhibitor in advance.

Questions? Give us a call at 740-670-5315. In case of inclement weather conditions, listen to WCLT-AM, WHTH-AM, or visit www.licking.osu.edu for an announcement. Announcement will also be made on the Hartford Fair and Licking County 4-H Facebook pages. Make-up date, if necessary, will be Saturday, January 27, 2018.

Ohio Cattlemen’s Camp – October 14-15

Anybody showing cattle is invited to attend!

Join in on the 2-day event for the opportunity to learn day-to-day care of your cattle project. Also, gain showmanship and clipping experience while learning about the cattle industry. Camp participants are encouraged to bring their calves along for “hands-on” experience and learning; however it is not required for participants to bring a calf. If more than 1 participant per family attends, families can choose to bring 1 calf per kid or 1 calf per family. We will dive into cattle care, showmanship, leadership, and also have a little fun with a tailgate on Saturday evening! Bring the entire family! Breakout sessions will be offered specially tailored to age-specific groups.
