Consider

Leveraging Volunteers:

  • Ask long-time volunteers who are well-connected in the community for introductions.
  • Strive for at least one Advisory Committee member each year to host a small parlor meeting at their home or office (also called garden parties) to introduce new staff, share program updates and present a call for support.
  • Share relevant information with key volunteers about fundraising through the OSU Foundation and provide talking points for advocacy in  the community.
  • Hold an annual donor thank you party and deliver a “state of Extension” impact report.

Having Conversations with Partners:

  • Set up long-term goal setting meetings with partners (e.g. county agencies) to discuss current and future programming, and how varied funding sources can support these goals for enhancement and enrichment (detracting away from potential reductions in funding).
  • Offer to host a free training session or participate in a partners’ event to demonstrate value and enhance brand recognition.

Planting Seeds:

  • Tell more impact stories and testimonials — thanking all contributing partners (including private donors) for helping make such outcomes possible.
  • Build visibility in the community.
  • Leave giving information with financial planners, lawyers (especially estate planners) and funeral homes.
  • Host an inexpensive breakfast, reception, open house or demonstration event and build relationships with attendees.

Starting with What you Have:

  • Already have an endowment? Host a successful 4-H dinner each year? Incorporate a “reach goal” into regular planning and promote the new initiative among your supporters.
  • Simply review lists of past donors, event attendees and former committee members with the thought of who may be willing to have a conversation about other ways to engage.
  • Send an annual mailing to top partners/donors or potential partners/donors that includes information about ways to support Extension.
