Intro: Why Philanthropy?

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is committed to enhancing the role that philanthropy plays in Extension at Ohio State.

Throughout the history of Extension, individuals, families, communities, businesses and industries have invested their time, money, assets and expertise into this land-grant tradition of providing research-based programming that strengthens the lives of all Ohioans.

In line with the organizational value of leading “[g]rassroots programs that engage local people in solving problems and addressing challenges,” philanthropy in Extension also promotes such collaboration. Fundraising and development foster personalized engagement with dedicated stakeholders. While gifts and money are inevitable topics in philanthropic conversations, the real focus is on relationships – on building partnerships with people and entities that believe in the transformative impact of Extension education and want to contribute resources to these efforts. Here, shared values are illuminated and innovation is nurtured.

Public appropriations, grants and contracts serve as the critical base of funding for Extension. Thus, maintaining strong relationships with government partners is imperative to the existence of local services. Economic fluctuations and political shifts can dramatically affect budgets in a short timeframe. Philanthropy, especially in the form of endowed gifts, widens the base of local funding. It provides a private platform for investments in the viability of Extension.

The Charge & the Goal

CFAES leadership has charged the Advancement team and Extension professionals with the goal of spreading the word about giving opportunities in Extension. Regular and open communication is vital to reaching shared goals. Contact information for the Extension Advancement team is available through the navigation toolbar on the left and is also accessible at advancement.cfaes.ohio-state.edu. Members from both teams are encouraged to exchange stories, feedback, needs and opportunities for maximum effectiveness.
