Perspective: Process

1. Research

For the project, I have a general layout in my mind at first and some special things: glass windows and a fish tank at the bottom of the bookshelf. Later, I started to looking for some certain objects for references.

Exercise

Line and Contour

For this exercise, I practiced visual observation by draw multiple contours of different objects. And then, I cut out one of them and traced the contour on another paper repeatedly to create a new composition and practice line weight.

Triangulation Drawing

During class, I learned the primary method of drawing: triangulation. To apply and get familiar with triangulation, I did few drawings in class and one outdoor observation drawing.

Grid Space

To get a sense of creating space, I did a precise version of the grid space.

To better understand linear perspective, I practiced more one point perspective and experimented with it.

2. Iteration

To transfer the digital to physical more easily, I scanned the grid space I made before as a reference and started to draw things on the another layer.  The first draft is similar to my final one. I like my studio being simple and basic, so I won’t be distracted by other non-important things.

After the first draft on the Sketchbook, I created another same grid space and draw on it. I replaced some items and modified the scale rug and position of couch.

3. Production

For final production, I didn’t use tracing paper. Instead, I drew on the another grid space and erased the pencil drawing. More details were added including the texture of the table and rug, shadow on the table, and water in the fish tank.

Shape Grammar: Process

1.Research

For this project, I didn’t really do any further research.

  • Exercise

To understand and explore more in design principle, I created four different compositions by using geometric shapes, curvilinear shapes, point, line with design principles. I started to make new shapes from experimenting multiple arrangements of circles, triangles and squares.

2. Iteration

For final project, I have to choose one design principle to apply on both positive and negative shapes. The design principle I choose to make further is movement, and the title is “Rotation”; so I started to create the sense of movement by arranging different sizes shapes with angles. Although the composition has the movement, the negative shapes didn’t work out. The design principle didn’t become activated relationship between the implied shapes and positive shapes.

The first iteration’s visual center is in the middle. I thought it would be better if the rotation starts form a corner, so I created the four triangles arrangement at the corner with a enclosed shape. For this time, I use the successful part from previous iteration which is create movement by arranging different sizes shapes with angles. I also think more about the negative space.

3.Production

Later, I started to notice that the pattern also creates a enclose shape which is similar to the corner one. On Mrs. Valentine’s advice, the arrows aren’t really necessary. As a result, I applied more shapes to create negative space in order to strengthen the whole movement of composition. The pattern of shapes also creates a flow line that could guide audience’s eye.

In order to transfer the digital to physical, I printed it in real scale, so that I can cut the shapes out and trace them on the black paper, and then cut it out from black paper. The big challenge during doing the physical version is making sure the angles between shapes are right. I have to make lots of little adjustments to get the final version, and then glue.

About me: process

Research

First, I found two articles by searching “good design” on OSU online library and one video on YouTube.

Draft 1

Frist, I came up the simple composition of  about-me page and filled the page with important information including a portrait and some introductions.

Draft 2

I tried to add more elements to make my page more personal and stand out. More information were added and categorized in this draft.

Final Draft

I reordered the information by its importance and added some personal works.
