Postdoctoral Researcher – Advanced Metallic Materials Characterization
Position Description and Responsibilities:
We are seeking a postdoctal reseracher in the area of advanced metallic materials characterization, specifically related to process-structure-property relationships in materials joining and additively manufactured materials. A successful applicant will be expected to plan and perform experiments, collect and analyze data to decipher relationships between processing parameters, microstructure and properties in fusion welds and additive metals and alloys. The candidate will perform microstructure characterization including various forms of microscopy, spectroscopy, diffraction, along with material property testing for properties including strength, toughness, hardness, modulus, and other properties. The candidate will apply various image and data processing techniques for statistical analysis of microstructures and mechanical properties. The candidate will be expected to combine materials processing knowledge to explore additional and/or complementary characterization and testing strategies to develop a clearer understanding of microstructural arrangements and material properties.
Further research responsibilities include: interaction and communication with national and international collaborators, preparation of project reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentation at project meetings and professional conferences, identification of funding opportunities and assistance with preparation of funding proposals, and mentoring of graduate students and undergraduates.
Experience:
Required: PhD in materials science or closely related engineering field with emphasis on metals research and microstructure characterization, including electron microscopy techniques
Desired: Experience in metallic materials joining and/or metal additive manufacturing, experience with diffraction techniques to characterize metallic microstructures, experience with experimental testing for structural material properties of metals, excellent communication skills
