Week of August 18 – 22 Scouting Summary Report

FRUIT:

  • Apples: Fruit is developing.  Codling moth numbers in traps remained high once again this week.  Apple maggot trap numbers were 0 across all orchards.  Red mites and two-spotted spider mites were found at above treatment threshold numbers in a few orchards.  Some fly speck and sooty blotch showing up as well.
  • Grapes:  Spotted wing drosophila (SWD) were identified from traps in grapes at 2 out of 3 trapping locations this past week.   Both locations with positive identifications had high numbers probably as a result of not following a consistent and regular spray program.  Japanese beetles and stinkbugs were also found at low numbers in some vineyards.  Black rot is present in some vineyards.

Week of July 28 – August 1 Scouting Report Summary

FRUIT:

  • Apples: Fruit is developing.  Some codling moth larvae were found in some fruit this week.  Aphids and red mites remained at low levels.  There was an increase in codling moths caught in pheromone traps in some orchards, enough to trigger another biofix date.  Apple maggot trap numbers remain at 0.
  • Grapes:  Scouts noted symptoms of grape black rot and powdery mildew in some locations.  Light to moderate defoliation due to Japanese beetle feeding has been found across vineyards.  The second generation flight of grape berry moth continues, moths were being caught in traps.  Growers should be applying an insecticide control for grape berry moth the week of August 4.
  • Brambles, Blackberries and Raspberries: Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) were again caught in traps this week from traps set in raspberries and blueberries.  Growers are advised to start a preventative spray program for ripening berries.
  • Blueberries:  Harvest continues for mid-season blueberries.  SWD have been found in blueberry traps.  Growers with ripening fruit should consider a preventative spray program.  Blueberry maggot traps have remained at 0.

Week of July 21 – 25 Scouting Report Summary

FRUIT:

  • Apples: Fruit is developing.  Some codling moth larvae were found in some fruit this week.  Aphids and red mites remained at low levels.  There was a small increase in codling moths caught in pheromone traps.  Apple maggot trap numbers remain at 0.
  • Grapes:  Scouts noted symptoms of grape black rot in some locations.  Light to moderate defoliation due to Japanese beetle feeding has been found across vineyards.  The recommendation to control Japanese beetles was made in one location.  The second generation flight of grape berry moth has started, moths were being caught in traps and this will trigger a timed control treatment to prevent damage to grape fruit.

Week of July 14 – 18 Scouting Report Summary

FRUIT:

  • Apples:  Overall, insect levels have decreased from the previous weeks.  Some light levels of green apple aphid were noted.  Fruit is developing.
  • Grapes:  Scouts noted symptoms of grape black rot in some locations.  Light defoliation due to Japanese beetle feeding has been found across vineyards.
  • Brambles, Blackberries and Raspberries: The big news is that spotted wing drosophila (SWD) was found in traps this week.  One female SWD in a West Salem area trap in black raspberries and one female SWD in the Wooster area from a trap in black raspberries.  Growers are advised to start a preventative spray program for ripening berries.
