Last week we discussed about undercover journalism. Personally I think judging whether or not undercover journalism is ethical is a case-by-case discussion, because in many stories that need to be covered can not be covered in a normal way, which would require journalists to “undercover” it. However, journalists definitely need to be very cautious when they are “undercovering” something, since somehow this special way of reporting and covering news could lead to problems of journalistic transparency and credibility when the reporters are not handling them well.

In class opinion piece
Ohio State is going to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade recycling panels on campus, in light of the upcoming Earth Day.
In my point of view, this action isn’t really necessary, and there’s no guarantee that new recycling panels are going to make a huge change on students recycling habits as well as our on-campus environment.
For our university, 36 thousand bucks should be spent on something else. Upgrading recycling panels is apparently not the first priority. Neva Young, a junior in sociology, believes that it euipping university libraries with more public computers would be more urgent than Appnew recycling panels , given many students are not able to work on computers during rush hours.
Besides, we are not recycling as much as we could do currently not for the lack of recycling panels. “No body around me recycles. Students simply don’t have that habit to do it. New recycling panels will not raise people’s awareness of that automatically.” Said Mark Umpenhour, a second-year biology major. What Mark said is very true. Unless students really come to realize they need to recycle on a daily base, new recycling panels will only make our campus “looks” more environmentally friendly.
All in all, the new recycling panels may help a little with the on-campus environment, but their impact will be very limited.
Feb.12 in-class assignment
Lucy Roger, a 20-year-old sophomore in agricultural communication at The Ohio State University went missing since Tuesday after she left Thompson Library at night.
Lucy is a 5-foot-4 Caucasian, about 120 pounds, with long brown hairs and bright eyes. She was wearing a grey, Ohio State hoodie and black jeans the day she went missing.
Lucy was last seen in the Thompson library. Roxanna, Lucy’s roommate told the police Lucy left Thompson Library with her study partner Trevor Thomas. Lucy and Trevor planed on go to a Greek event held in the Ohio Union that night.
Trevor said he didn’t go to that event then and Lucy went to the Ohio Union alone, where her backpack was found and taken to the lost and found.
Lucy didn’t report to her economics class, which was held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This was unlike her, according to her professor.
Lucy’s last tweet was published at 6:45 p.m. the day she went missing, saying “School was so freaking overwhelming”.
Lucy’s parents were shaken by Lucy’s missing. Lucy’s father refused to talk about it, but has created a Facebook page to raise awareness about his daughter’s disappearance.
What does journalism mean to me?
I want to work as a journalist because journalists are cool people. They are incredibly hard-working, self-motivated and never fail to push themselves to the limitation of their own potential by going to new places, learning new things and uncovering the truth.
I want to be a journalist because I’ve always been thrilled with having the privilege to see the big events that may change the history in person, to listen to people’s stories and to record them in my own way.
I want to be a journalist also because I want my voice to be heard. I don’t say I want to be famous, but I do adore people can make a difference on the earth by their own actions and opinions. For me, working for medias may be the most straightforward way to be one of those people.
