Erin Malley & Doruk Golcu are an internationally touring teaching couple based in the United States. Partners on the dance floor and in life, E&D are known as dancers for their flow, their turns, their ability to make complex sequences look effortless, and their chemistry that has continued to grow in the 17 years they have been dancing together.

Erin and Doruk are generous teachers, known for the approachable way that they share their knowledge of both the body in motion and the structure of the dance. With a breadth of experience from the local to the international levels, they have taught and performed extensively in the United States; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Ireland; Portugal; Switzerland; the United Kingdom; and Turkey. In higher education, Erin and Doruk have taught classes and courses at Stanford University (CA), Western Michigan University (MI), University of Hawai’i at Manoa (HI), and California State University East Bay. They are routinely sought out by the more experienced dancers in the communities they visit for their skill at helping students progress at every level.

In their teaching, Erin and Doruk prioritize partnership, concentrating on what makes true leading and following, and making the dance work as a collaborative team. They use structural analysis to facilitate understanding. They believe that this analysis can be used to build the foundation for any aesthetic styling you choose.

Erin and Doruk greatly encourage exploration and experimentation in their students. They have lived in several very vibrant communities containing a broad variety of tango styles, and they have danced socially around the world. Thanks to that exposure, they can strongly contextualize their teachings to different styles and approaches of dancing social tango.

As artists and teachers, Erin and Doruk are constantly in process. They are always seeking to discover more about themselves as dancers and learners. The evolution of their growth in turn informs and deepens their teaching, making each encounter with their students more enriching than the last.

She has since moved to Indianapolis, and has become a teacher, organizer, and DJ. She has studied with milongueros throughout the country; her inspirations include but are not limited to Homer and Christiana Ladas, Nick Jones and Diana Cruz, and Vania Rey. She travels to study tango as often as she can, and believes that being able to both lead and follow is inherent to teaching tango. You will often see her in the leader role while teaching.

Sly Masters has intently been studying tango in San Francisco for fifteen years. He pays homage to his long time teachers Chelsea Eng and Christy Cote, his teachers Ney Melo and Jennifer Bratt, and Homer and Christina Ladas. He is a proficient leader and follower in all styles of tango–milonguero, salon, and nuevo, and has fun developing his own ‘style’

steve potluck tango dance january

Join us on Friday, January 10th 2019 at the Women’s Field House for a potluck practilonga with special guest Steve Darmo from Toledo! From 7-8pm Steve will teach a workshop about musicality and then from 8-10:45pm Steve will DJ. This workshop is about tango endings:

The workshop will be geared more towards being a musicality class than being a strict class on steps and figures.  From my experience, creating good endings comes from either knowing the music or being able to anticipate when (and how) the music will end.  The steps are secondary and are necessarily mostly improvisation to fit in what you can within the limitations of the dance space available, the skill level of your partner, and the number of beats remaining when you recognize the music will end.

I will be talking a lot about the music and the differences between several of the popular orchestras, while giving many examples.  I will be playing the last 20-30 seconds of numerous popular tango songs throughout the workshop to help the students hone their musicality skills to time their steps with the ending of the music.

Cost is the same as our weekly lesson & practicas – FREE for first-time attendees. Otherwise, $3 for students & $5 for non-students for Lesson & Practica or $2 for students & $3 for non-students for Practica Only.Bring food to share and come dance the night away.

More about Steve:

Steve Darmo has been dancing tango for over 10 years and has been teaching in Toledo since 2014. Before beginning to learn social dancing he was a distance runner. He competed in college and later finished a dozen marathons including Boston and New York. He began to learn Latin and ballroom dancing in 2008. But when he saw Argentine tango for the first time in a class in Ann Arbor he was captivated. “When I heard Argentine tango music for the first time and saw how they were dancing I immediately recognized that this was the dance for me. I thought – why am I messing around with salsa when I could be doing this?” He found a beginner tango series starting up in Toledo and soon become obsessed with the music and the dance. In the years that followed he has studied with many of the best instructors from around the world and regularly takes trips to Buenos Aires to learn the technique, codes, and finer details of social dancing from the milongueros there.

Steve has danced socially in milongas throughout Buenos Aires and Europe as well as North America. He writes about his travel experiences and observations in his blog “The International Tango Machine.” Steve recently completed his first book, “Tango Endings.” It was published in February 2018. https://www.amazon.com/Tango-Endings-Argentine-Anticipate-Musical/dp/153980724X/

Steve has also been a tango DJ since 2013 and organizes a weekly practica in Toledo. He has an extensive knowledge of tango music and strives to create a fun atmosphere with good energy and excellent music for dancing. He DJs regularly in Toledo, Ann Arbor, Cleveland, and Detroit.

A special evening with Guest DJ Kim Scola (Cleveland). Lesson from 7-8pm with Jorge and Penny from Trinity Tango. Practilonga from 8 – 10:45 pm DJed by Kim.

Kim came into the tango world in 2012 as a Salsa dancer and quickly fell in love with the dance. Very soon after that, she began to be interested in the music itself. After some encouragement from organizers Timmy Tango and Joanne Pogros, she started working in Cleveland as a guest DJ. Her experience as a DJ has expanded over the years, DJing for the regular milongas in her community, as well as traveling to other communities to play for their events and festivals. She has been influenced greatly by Hernán Prieto, as she attended his DJ seminars and learned how to follow many of his techniques. Kim’s style is characterized by creating a positive, upbeat environment that builds and sustains the energy on the dance floor until the end of the evening when she likes to bring the energy back down with sultry, romantic tandas. She likes to express her own personality with her very carefully chosen cortinas, and she loves connecting with other dancers through the music. She hopes to continue developing connections with other communities and having the privilege of sharing her love for Tango music all over the world.

On Friday, February 16th, join The Argentine Tango Club at the Ohio State University at the Women’s Field House for our Special Valentines Milonga. Don’t know what a Milonga is? No problem! A “Milonga” is a place or event where tango is danced between a lead and follow. The music played is mainly tango, vals, and milonga (these are musical genres), and we dance to both traditional and alternative/nuevo music styles. Usually, three songs of a kind are played in a row (this is called tanda) followed by a short musical break (called cortina) to clear the dancefloor and allow partner changes. Our event will begin at 7 pm with two dance lessons (beginners & intermediate) that will occur simultaneously, followed by a dance party & potluck from 8 – 11 pm. Are you interested in learning tango? Perhaps you like listening to the music? Or maybe you are looking to meet some friendly and fun people? Then we encourage you to attend! No partner or experience necessary. If this is your first time at our event, it is absolutely free! If not,  it is only $3 for students, and $5 for non-students. Elegant dress code.
