Module 7: My final sharing to you

Hi my dearest friends

The time has come for me to write my last blog, the seventh blog. It is actually a little funny because my blog number will be the same as Harry Potter books (seven series). Never mind with the bad joke and let’s go to my main point.

In this last blog, I will try to summarize what this past seven weeks experience in writing blog mean to me.

First of all, I will tell you what I learned about online technology. Online technology is a very powerful tool when it use as a study tool. However it can also be a slower in our online study progress if we don’t do it right. Why is that? It is because besides online study tools, there are many procrastination site in the online system. Easy example of this is facebook, youtube, or 9gag. At the end it is all about how we want to put ourself in focus study online. It might required a little effort in fully concentrating at online study, but once you focus you can study efficiently and effectively because there are tons of tools and resources that can help you.

Even though there are great online study tools that can help me studies, it is useless unless you want to put yourself in studying mood. So, it is very important to study about your behavior or your way of studying. Through these past seven weeks, I learned a lot about myself. Furthermore, I discover something that I never realized before about the real me. Now, I know that I am a super procrastinate person. I used to think that I am a so-so procrastinate guy, but I discover that I am more than a so-so when I do some surveys and actually doing my assignments that have a week period time. I also know that I am not an organized person and can be clumsy. However, all of this are starting to change starting today because I know what I have to do next in becoming a better student and even more, a better person.

Through out this course, my most meaningful experienced is engaging the Google system. Before I take this class, I just use Google to search some info without using it tools fully. Now I know about effective search and I understand to use other cool function in Google such as Google drive and Google calendar.

Now that I fully understand the materials thought in the past seven weeks, finally I have to face the real challenge that is applying it in my future study. This is always the problem in every person because there is a wall between theory concept/teaching and the reality called comfort zone or habit. For me, this comfortable zone is very hard to overcome. I tried to torn it down but somehow I hit it pretty hard and trip over. It would required me some time to change and apply all the good teaching that thought to me from this online class. However it doesn’t mean that until now I never apply the materials. There are some materials/teaching that I already done and I actually very happy when it finally became my habit. Now that I know that happiness, I become more motivated to apply the teaching even more. I know it is hard but I can see a light in my dark habit and I know I can be successful in the future.

That is all my friends. My final sharing to you. I hope all these seven blogs can help you improve somehow, if not you know how to contact me now (just comment in this blog and I’ll reply your comment J).

Good bye and best of luck to you!!

Module 6: Search and Research Blog

Hi all

This week I will talk about something that most of us know how to do, but we might do it wrong. Just as the tittle said, the topic is about search and research. As you realize now, this is all taking back in making a paper or an essay. Good academic paper will need some time and effort to be having a good quality. There are some factors that you have to see in the source you choose called source credibility. The factors and what each those need to be known are:

–       Reliability (contact info, credential of author, reputation of publisher/author, peer reviewed)

–       Quality (broad generalization, up to date, consistent, well written, biased, citation)

–       Utility (Related to my topic, appropriate audience, enough or too much detail)

One major source that commonly use is Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an user generated, editable online encyclopedia. It is good to find basic information of what we want but we need to be discerning because not all of the info in Wikipedia are true or reliable.

Now after we know about what we need to know in the source of our information, lets finally discuss about search and research.

Search is a new and usually less than a decade  gaining information about something. The information subject that we want to focus on can be having lots of quantity but not so many good quality articles.

Research is a school or academic institution based paper to pursue the quality of some subject. It can take a long time to do it. There have to be any citation in an research paper because the content of any research paper is based on someone else work, and we have to acknowledge their work.

There are some searching basics:

–       Keyword search,for  example www.google.com

–       Category search, for example www.yahoo.com

–       Metasearch: compiling search from various engines, for example www.search.com

Our best information article might be in one of those search basics. We might need to take a look in every search category. Because of that, we can spend a lot of time finding our most related article. So, I want to suggest you to use Boolean logic. It means a shortcut in search engine (ex: google) like minus sign, quotation, and, or to help us narrow our search in a fast time.

Some of us might realize about Boolean Logic, but most of us might already know about this and not using it full in doing our every search. So, I encourage you to use this very technique in doing future search. If you can do a good job in searching article, you can make a good paper, which is getting more reliable outcome.

That’s all for this week mate 🙂

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening & Viewing Strategies

Dear my friends

In today’s blog I will discuss the importance of note taking and listening to the lecture. First of all, I believe that all of you are familiar with power point presentation. Without any doubt I can say that you have seen this during the lecture in your classes. The question is, are you really paying attention to the slide or you just see it and think nothing? This is a very important problem because studying from ppt slides is very easy and convenient once you know how to do it.

Some instructor may upload the ppt for the next lecture beforehand. So if you get ppt before lecture print it and bring it to class so you can make notes on it during the lecture. If you don’t want to print, you can open the slide on your laptop and type the notes in the little note section area in each ppt slides. If you forgot to bring ppt file, use your note and divide it into ppt sections to organize the order. It is very important to not copy the ppt, but just focus on the instructor explanation of the slides.

Maybe your class lecture doesn’t use ppt, but your professor upload online lecture video. In this case you must do several things to make a good note. First, you can type the key points from the video and write the video source at the beginning of the note to help you remember where to find it. The key points can be just literally type into the notes or you can make a whole paragraph based on the key points (I do it this way).

If you are really organize, you can make your notes in a template. One method of it is the Cornell method. Cornell method, divide the notes into sections (lecturer thought and your thought). This include cues, examples, questions, summaries

Another study source is Podcasts. Podcats is Personal On Demand Casts and this is a great way to extend what you are learning. It is easy to use and everyone can use it. No need satellite or broadcasting station, just a microphone or recorder and upload it online.

Why listen to podcast?

–       To pursue interest or learn something new

–       Get another point of view

–       Study while having another activity

One example of podcast is itunes

How?

–       Add website for podcasts to your laptop/computer

–       Sign up to follow podcasts using RSS

–       Search podcasts on itunes

–       Download to comp and transfer to mobile device

Benefits from online videos:

–       New angles on difficult concepts

–       Interesting topics

–       Can see it anytime and can be replay or pause

–       Appeal to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning

–       Being proactive

That’s all that I want to share about the ebenfits of video studying and how to take notes from it, also it benefits.

See you again next week 🙂

Video Blog Post

Hi again my friends

This week I will show you the importance of using video as a study source. The video above is a little piece of important subject in my major, Industrial Engineering. It show you the difference between takt time and cycle time. I am sure you have heard about cycle time before, but I guess not many of you know about takt time. These two subject is related with the factory production rate. I hope the video will make sense and you can understand after you watch it, otherwise you can comment to ask questions about it. I will be happy to answer any question.

Let’s switch gear to the usefulness of the video in helping us study. My video example is very specific to what I had studied before so I can understand it well enough. But, you can always study from online video for any topic you want. The advantage is that you may find a different point of view from what the class lecture. You also can get a better understanding of the topic because you are more focus in paying attention to it. Another advantage from video studying is that you can always find another similar video if you don’t like with your current video watching.

Well this is all I can share with you. I hope you have more interest in studying from online videos now.

See you next time

Module 4: web enhanced reading and study strategies

Well this week is special my friends because I posted two posts due to a little bit clumsiness that I made when I wrote the previous blog. In this blog, I want to give you advice on how to study from online reading.

Most of you must be wanted to finish a reading assignment as quickly as possible so you must be jump straight into the reading. However, it is very crucial to do a little preparation before reading. First, you must have to know what are you going to read from the syllabus. And then put all distractions away (this is very hard to do so).

After you actually do the reading, you have to be focus on what you want to know and read the text on your own pace. To make you comfortable with the text, you can scan through the text first so you will know what you will read. Look for key points and highlights, write it down, or put more time understanding it. Of course in a text there are several sections of points discussed. So, it is better for you to make summarize in each important points before you move on. And then if you can make some questions in each section, it would be better because you can always know where to find the reading again.

Most of you must be satisfied after reading and then do your other task, however there is a small after reading things for you to do. This is can be essential and sometimes forgotten easily by students (you). I suggest you to keep a record of your reading key points. There are four ways to do it:

  1. Copy some quotes to Ms. Word
  2. Copy all reading text to Ms. Word
  3. Open your reading in pdf and use the highlights tools.
  4. Print the reading and use highlights in the hard copy (printouts)

If somehow you are very lazy to do it (which you may) you can make a bookmark

After you finish the reading, you can organize your thought to study by studying as usual or you can study online using some online study tools. There are a lot of online study tools available such as infographics, flash card, bubb.le, online lecture videos, etc. These tools will help you to put your thinking process in order because it can helps you to understand the relation between a bunch of key points in the reading. Online study tools also make you think better because it make you use your left and right brain. This is because most online study tools are using pictures or graphics to learn.

Hope these amazing tips on reading online and how to study online helps you on your study.

See you again next week

Go BUCKS !

Module 4

Hi again my friends. This week I will be giving you some thoughts about enjoying college and how to survive in it.

College life is a journey that should be fun, exciting, and have some challenges that won’t trip you over but push you forward instead. You might be stressed out from your classes’ workload and just want to get rid everything but the fun of partying. However, all complains and hardness that you have might come from making the wrong decision or apply the right decision at the wrong time.

One mistake that we can have is that we take too many classes because we want to graduate as soon as possible. This is the number one killer for us in enjoying college life. It is okay to finish college in 4 years, which is the ideal time to spend to get an undergraduate degree. It might a little longer to graduate if you are in Science or Engineering major. The point is that it is better for you to take reasonable and realistic units per academic term (quarter or semester) so that you can focus on your classes. You must not forget that you will have anything to do besides like club activities or simply hang out with friends (maybe party and stuff 🙂

Besides becoming wiser in taking so many classes for the next term, you can start creating short-term and long-term goals. This can be very useful in focusing you to do your responsible tasks and still give you some room to have fun. Short-term goal can be really short such as a day in length and a long-term goal can be for a semester or couple of years. You will be amazed after you finish creating the goals (short and long) because you will realize about how much time that you actually have after you fulfill all your responsible tasks.

That is all for this week. See you again next week for different sharing

Cheers

Module 3: Developing Positive Online Relationship

Online community is surely having a lot of power in today society. This week blog will specifically discuss about the tips for students to create online connection with each other.

Although my context in this blog is developing online friendship relationship, there is no major difference with a regular friendship. I believe you guys have plenty of experiences with computers. Some of you may already know about getting new friends online. However the question is, are you developing a good online friendship?

We, as a student must have known that meet someone new in each class is very easy. However the challenge is whether you can know them closely or not. What I mean here is to not be buddies at school, but buddies at online world. In other words, expand your online connection. Some may say that this is not a big deal, but they are wrong. An easy example is imagine that your new friend may know about who are the good and bad instructors for your next courses. Isn’t this is a huge chunk to determine your success in the next term (unless you like to suffer J)? Or, who knows that your career or love relationship can be found from your new friend’s connection.

What you have to remember to make a good online connection is your first impression. Since you may not meet face to face, your wording in chatting or sending e-mails is like your intonation in talking to them. You may use jokes or nonverbal words, but don’t forget to draw a line so that you do not insult your online friends.

Some other tips to remember:

  • Spell check and grammar

This may not that crucial in communication between students, but you still want to look as a student in using the correct writing form

  • Use nonverbal sign (emoticons, etc)

This is a good icebreaker but like I mentioned before, know the limit

  • Avoid miscommunication

Writing clearly and state all your thoughts is important, otherwise you may have arguments over something silly

  • Avoid all capital letters

Just avoid this because using all CAPS is like stating that YOU ARE ANGRY

Well, this is all for this blog post.

I hope it useful to you guys.
