Year in Review

These two pictures were taken at the North Campus Scholars Tailgate. At this event I got to spend some quality time with my roommates, who also happen to be my best friends. I’m so thankful that Biological Scholars has led me to both of these wonderful ladies! I also got to meet people from other scholars program and I learned about what they do in their programs.

G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S is a mnemonic used by The Ohio State University’s honors and scholars program to provide an outline for participating students to follow in order to achieve excellence. Each letter stands for specific section of character and when they are all combined, the result will be a well-rounded individual.

G stands for global awareness. O stands for original inquiry. A stands for academic enrichment. L stands for leadership development. S stands for Service Engagement.

Of these five sections, I have been particularly working on two of them: Academic Enrichment and Service Engagement. In the realm of Academic Enrichment, college is a big adjustment that comes with huge difference in education and expectations. I have been working tediously to overcome this adjustment so that I can be successful academically, while also forming habits that will make me a life-long learner. Service has always been extremely important to me because I think there is nothing more powerful than donating your time in order to help others. I did a lot of volunteer work in high school and through Biological Scholars I am able to continue to serve others.

Career

Currently my long term goal is to become a veterinarian. I hope to attend Ohio States veterinary school.  I have a grand interest in food animal medicine and reproduction and would like to pursue a specialization in either of those areas. I am also considering pursuing a Master’s Degree in cattle behavior and welfare.

Artifacts

For my artifact section I have chosen an object that means a lot to me.

The picture of the Medina County Fair pin represents hard work and determination. I have been a life long resident of Medina County and have been attending our local fair since I was born. At the age of nine, I decided to enroll in a local 4H group. Through 4H I took on several projects including still exhibits and over 7 different animal projects. Over the course of 10 years I gained an immense love and appreciation of agriculture. Along with this love I also learned the some of the hardest lessons a child has to learn. I learned about loss, determination, respect, leadership, responsibility, community, passion, compassion, showmanship, citizenship, and more. All the while, I thought I was simply just having fun, but looking back I have realized that 4H has shaped into the person I am and for that I will always be thankful.

About Me

Hello, everyone! My name is Ashley Stroud and I am a second year student here at The Ohio State University. I intend to major in animal science with a specialization in Nutrition. I am also working toward a molecular genetics minor and a dairy science certificate. Currently, I am a member of the Biological Scholars program, the Pre-Veterinary Medical Association, the Animal Welfare and Behavior Club, Alpha Lambda Delta, Buckeye Dairy Club, and Romophos. My long term educational goal is to earn my doctorate in veterinary medicine.

I come from a small town called Spencer, Ohio and I live on a farm with around six different species of animals. I attended Black River High School. My most memorable achievements/ moments during high school included: giving my salutatorian speech at graduation, and taking part in community service activities. Some of the community service activities I was apart of were: volunteering for the American Red Cross, raising funds for the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation and the Jeremy Cares Foundation, participating in an animal therapy program to help those in need, and several others.

I am an avid lover of learning and I am so excited to see what the my time here at Ohio State will have to offer. Go Bucks!
