Fun Fact Friday: The Ohio State vs University of Michigan Rivalry

OSU1

One of best rivalries in sports resumes Saturday, when Ohio State and Michigan meet on gridiron for the 111th time.

This famed rivalry did not get started on the football field, but rather a conflict over the Toledo Strip.  The conflict erupted when both Ohio and Michigan claimed Toledo as a part of their statehood petition. After a brief and bloodless battle, Ohio gained the disputed area from Michigan

This incident increased tension between the two states for over 60 years before the two teams met on the field for the first time in 1897. Since then, the rivals have met every year on for their last regular season game.

With such a long and historic rivalry, there are many traditions from their meetings. Ohio State started the “Gold Pants” tradition in 1942. Each Ohio State player and coach receives a gold miniature charm depicting a pair of football pants after a victory over the Michigan Wolverines. Many former football players recall receiving their Gold Pants as their most memorable part of their careers at Ohio State.

In addition to these gold pants, football players can secure their place in Ohio State lore by a great game against Michigan. One player who had standout games against Michigan was Archie Griffin.  During Archie’s senior year 1975, Ohio State came back from behind and beat Michigan 21-14. That was the year that Archie Griffin won his second Heisman trophy. That trophy is on display outside the Great Hall at the Union.

In recent years, the rivalry has taken a turn in Ohio State’s favor. Ohio State has won the last nine out of ten meetings with Michigan. Saturday will be another chance for Ohio State to extend that streak to three consecutive wins under Urban Meyer and have bragging rights for the next year.  The game kicks off at noon at Ohio Stadium! Go Bucks!

Student Organization Spotlight: The PRactice

practice

This week we are thrilled to highlight Ohio State’s very own student PR agency, The PRactice.

The PRactice is a student-run public relations firm at The Ohio State University.  Their mission is to create an environment for students to excel and learn skills pertaining to the public relations industry.

Students get hands-on experience in everything from creative, event planning, social media, sales, marketing and media relations.

The experiences students have in the PRactice are more like an internship than a student organization. Students are expected to commit a lot of time when working with clients.

The PRactice works with clients like Easton Way, Order Up Columbus, Buckeye Brittle, The Bindu Project and more.

Last year, students who worked for Ride for World Health had seventeen media hits in three months for their event. Five students had their press releases published in newspapers across the nation.

In addition to that, the PRactice helped plan the 2014 Regional PaRtners Conference that was held in the Ohio Union in April hosted by the Walt Seifert chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America at the Ohio State University.  Students and professionals who attended, spent time exploring what is up and coming in the world of PR. These stories are just a couple of examples of the great work that students do in the PRactice.

For more information about how to join or work with the PRactice for public relations help for your next event, visit osuthepractice.com or e-mail director@osupractice.com

Fun Fact Friday: Illibuck Trophy

One of the wooden Illibuck Trophies

One of the wooden Illibuck Trophies

To help celebrate this weekend’s football game against the University of Illinois, our Fun Fact Friday is about the Illibuck Trophy.

Did you know that the original trophy traded between Ohio State and the University of Illinois was a live turtle?

The tradition between the two schools began in 1925 with the winner taking possession of the turtle until the following year’s game. The turtle was picked because of its long life expectancy and as a symbol for the beginning of a long rivalry with the schools.

In 1927, the original Illibuck turtle passed away. In the years since, ten wooden Illibucks have been used to carry on the tradition, and the score of each Ohio State/Illinois game is painted on the “shell.”

As the second oldest trophy passed between two Big Ten Conference teams, Ohio State currently leads the rivalry 65 to 30. The two teams play next on Saturday in Ohio Stadium for their 112th meeting.
