Rock Out at Buckeye Blackout!

Unplug for the night, grab some friends and join us April 9 at 8 p.m. in the Ohio Union Performance Hall for Buckeye Blackout’s annual concert.
Buckeye Blackout is a student organization that focuses on raising awareness about sustainability through art and music.

Rachel Skewer and Clayton Perry founded the organization as freshmen with the hopes that Buckeye Blackout would become a large campus event that brought light to sustainability. Clayton Perry, a founding member, explains “the whole idea is to get OSU students to contribute to one big night of energy conservation on the night of the concert, while we support our local and student performers.”

Buckeye Blackout’s annual concert is a free show and all they ask is that before you head over that you turn off your lights at home and unplug your appliances to conserve energy. The night will be filled with wonderful local musicians and bands, free giveaways and easy tips for leading a more sustainable life.

Union Universe: Keith B. Key Center

March means spring is just around the corner and so are those projects that you may have been procrastinating on. Before you know it Spring Break has come and gone and your deadlines are getting closer and closer. Don’t be caught off guard this year; the Keith B. Key Center for Leadership and Service can help you with any of your project needs and more.

The Keith B. Key Center for Student Leadership and Service, located in the Ohio Union, offers great services to students including the Resource Room, meeting spaces, leadership and service opportunities. Here’s how to take advantage of what the Keith B. Key Center has to offer you:

  1. Resource Room-
I could go on and on about the Resource Room and all it has to offer but I’ll hit the major points that could help you with any of your academic needs. The Resource Room offers students affordable printing, office resources, supplies for creative projects and assistance with anything Keith B. Key related.
So if you need to print a 20 page study guide, make a poster for your group project, create buttons for that upcoming campaign you’re helping on or need a few balloons to spruce up your upcoming event, the Keith B. Key Center is the place to go.
  2. Meeting Rooms-
Not only does the Keith B. Key Center have plenty of meeting rooms that can be reserved but it also has a lounge where you can study or just relax. Group projects are common in college and finding a quiet place to meet isn’t always easy. Reserve a meeting space for you and your group at the Keith B. Key Center. It’s as easy as stopping by the Resource Room, choosing a date and time that’s available and booking it.
  3. Service Opportunities-
Paying it forward is important to most Buckeye’s and if you’re looking for a way to get involved and give back then the Keith B. Key Center is the place to get started. The Center is home to many service organizations including Buck-I-SERV, BuckeyeThon and Pay It Forward.
  4. Leadership Opportunities-
Improve or refine your leadership skills by exploring the many leadership organizations and opportunities at the center. A wonderful opportunity to expand upon your leadership is the Annual Conference on Leadership and Civic Engagement which is made possible by the Keith B. Key Center. This conference is a free, daylong event open to all students and touches on strength-based leadership, service-learning and team development. You could get involved with other great organizations such as Buckeye Leadership Fellows, LeaderShape and Mount Leadership Society.

These are just a few of many opportunities and resources the Keith B. Key Center for Leadership and Service at the Ohio Union has to offer Ohio State students and organizations. For more information about the Keith B. Key Center or their hours visit: http://ohiounion.osu.edu/get_involved/csls.

How To: Be Successful at Riding the CABS

The CABS, Campus Area Bus System, is a campus transportation service provided by The Ohio State University Transit and Traffic Management. What’s great about CABS is the multiple routes that make different parts of campus more accessible, it’s quick, and best yet it’s free!

Once upon a time ago I was slightly nervous to get on a CABS bus. I didn’t understand how the routes worked or where they went. I also didn’t realize how many resources the university provides students to make hopping on a CABS quick and easy!

Check out these quick and easy tips for mastering CABS:

  1. Download the app – If you don’t already have the Ohio State app, go and download it now. Seriously, download it. The Ohio State app not only makes checking grades and locating classes easier but it also includes a buses feature where you can track CABS. The bus app allows you to look up different routes, figure out the nearest bus stop, tells you an anticipated wait time and most importantly GPS tracks all the CABS.
  2. Plan ahead – Nothing is worse than having to chase the bus while everyone around you watches this chaos unfold. You don’t have to be that person if you plan ahead. Look at the app before getting ready to leave for your destination and figure out which route you need to take, where the bus is located and how long until it gets to your stop. Maybe you’ll have to speed walk every now and then to catch the bus but I guarantee you if you plan ahead you’ll never have to chase the bus again.
  3. Don’t forget bus etiquette – I personally think it’s important to treat others the way you’d wish to be treated and this mantra certainly applies to riding the bus. Some great ways to show your bus etiquette according to Ohio State’s Transit and Traffic Management are to let others exit before you enter the bus, remember to hold on to the bars if you’re standing and to avoid congesting the bus, use the front door to enter and the back door to exit. Most importantly, don’t forget to thank the drivers! They work hard to make sure each and every one of us arrives safely to wherever we may be heading.

#BuckeyeLove

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, fellow Buckeyes, and you don’t need a Valentine to share your #BuckeyeLove.

#BuckeyLove is all about showing and spreading your love for being a Buckeye. This year at the Ohio Union we’ve had some great events that celebrate our love for the university and our passion for paying it forward. Let’s take a look back at some of these events that show just how much #BuckeyeLove we have.

Buckeye Love Blood Drive

  1. Blood Drives: Red Cross hosts multiple blood drives every school year at the Ohio Union. One of the biggest donation periods is during the Michigan-Ohio State Blood Battle that occurs every year before the big game. Last year alone, 2,529 pints of blood were donated by the Buckeye community. To put it in perspective 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives.
  2. Career Fairs: Finding a job or internship can be difficult these days but our Buckeye community is dedicated to helping students succeed. Many colleges and university departments help host career fairs all throughout the year. This semester we still have the Spring Career Fair on February 24 to look forward to here at the Ohio Union.
    Buckeye Love Brutus Bday
  3. Brutus’ 50th Birthday Celebration: This year was Brutus the Buckeye’s 50th birthday and the Ohio Union hosted a spectacular celebration for the occasion. I mean, what better way to celebrate than to bring together alumni, students, faculty and special university guests who all joined together to show their love not only for Brutus but also for Ohio State.

    Buckeye Love Buckeyethon

  4. BuckeyeThon: BuckeyeThon is an extraordinary student organization whose goal is to raise awareness and money for the Hematology, Oncology and BMT Department of Columbus’ Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Every year BuckeyeThon hosts the annual twenty-four hour dance marathon to raise money and awareness For The Kids. Buckeye’s love to give back and this year BuckeyeThon raised over 1.33 million dollars. What an amazing achievement!
