Union Universe: Keith B. Key Center

March means spring is just around the corner and so are those projects that you may have been procrastinating on. Before you know it Spring Break has come and gone and your deadlines are getting closer and closer. Don’t be caught off guard this year; the Keith B. Key Center for Leadership and Service can help you with any of your project needs and more.

The Keith B. Key Center for Student Leadership and Service, located in the Ohio Union, offers great services to students including the Resource Room, meeting spaces, leadership and service opportunities. Here’s how to take advantage of what the Keith B. Key Center has to offer you:

  1. Resource Room-
I could go on and on about the Resource Room and all it has to offer but I’ll hit the major points that could help you with any of your academic needs. The Resource Room offers students affordable printing, office resources, supplies for creative projects and assistance with anything Keith B. Key related.
So if you need to print a 20 page study guide, make a poster for your group project, create buttons for that upcoming campaign you’re helping on or need a few balloons to spruce up your upcoming event, the Keith B. Key Center is the place to go.
  2. Meeting Rooms-
Not only does the Keith B. Key Center have plenty of meeting rooms that can be reserved but it also has a lounge where you can study or just relax. Group projects are common in college and finding a quiet place to meet isn’t always easy. Reserve a meeting space for you and your group at the Keith B. Key Center. It’s as easy as stopping by the Resource Room, choosing a date and time that’s available and booking it.
  3. Service Opportunities-
Paying it forward is important to most Buckeye’s and if you’re looking for a way to get involved and give back then the Keith B. Key Center is the place to get started. The Center is home to many service organizations including Buck-I-SERV, BuckeyeThon and Pay It Forward.
  4. Leadership Opportunities-
Improve or refine your leadership skills by exploring the many leadership organizations and opportunities at the center. A wonderful opportunity to expand upon your leadership is the Annual Conference on Leadership and Civic Engagement which is made possible by the Keith B. Key Center. This conference is a free, daylong event open to all students and touches on strength-based leadership, service-learning and team development. You could get involved with other great organizations such as Buckeye Leadership Fellows, LeaderShape and Mount Leadership Society.

These are just a few of many opportunities and resources the Keith B. Key Center for Leadership and Service at the Ohio Union has to offer Ohio State students and organizations. For more information about the Keith B. Key Center or their hours visit: http://ohiounion.osu.edu/get_involved/csls.

Union Universe: The Ohio State University Bookstore

Union Bookstore

The Student Life’s Ohio Union has a lot to offer – from a grand ballroom to office spaces and from dance rooms to an instructional kitchen – there’s something for everyone in the building many people refer to as the “living room” of The Ohio State University. The Ohio Union also has quite a few hidden treasures. One of these happens to be the The Ohio State University Bookstore at the Ohio Union, which is owned by Barnes and Noble College as a part of the continuing partnership between Ohio State and Barnes and Noble.

The bookstore, which is located in the northeast corner of the building, offers a large selection of apparel and merchandise as well as a wide variety of snacks and drinks. With hours every day of the week, it’s a great place to find that perfect game day outfit or to pick up a notebook on your way to class. Specific store hours can be found at this link.

The bookstore also has a UniPrint desk which offers printing, copying and other services. UPS services are available in the bookstore as well. You can find out more about UniPrint at this link.

Union Universe: Corridors

Up on the third floor of The Ohio State Union, tucked into a corner, there is a small study area. A couple of arm chairs and a table would lead you to think this part of the union was your everyday space-however four doors lining the wall say otherwise.

Picture showing the doors of all of the Unions at Ohio State

The first door is dark wood, plain with an oversized keyhole that screams ancient. 117A is stamped across the front and at a first glance the door looks plain..almost boring. Upon opening the door however, there is a wealth of information about The

Original Ohio Union, which held students from 1910-1951-making the door over 100 years old. Pictures, quotes, and other information tell the story of the Union’s origins of the country’s first union at a public university.

The next door is the same dark wood, however the shape is different. It has a medieval curviness at a first glance, with the same large doorknob and fixtures. This door belongs to the Women’s Union, which operated from 1922-1951 as a social center for the female students when their allotted one room center was too small (its almost funny to think that 100 years ago, men and women weren’t allowed to be in the same building.)

Next up is the door from the first Union on High Street. This building served both male and female students from 1951-2007, making it the longest operating Student Union. Information regarding the buildings long history and the decision to remodel are depicted with photos behind the lightwood and glass pane of the door.

The last door may look familiar, and that’s because it’s the design for the doors at our current Union. The Ohio Union logo on a metallic door handle is identical to the doors you would use to go into a conference room just down the hall-but what’s different is that by opening that door you’re probably going to yet another group meeting, and by opening this door you’ll get to see the decision’s between our current building, and the culmination of 105 years of The Ohio Union.

Union Universe: D-Tix

One of the great features of our Ohio Union is D-Tix—a discounted ticket program located at the Information Desk on the first floor. Students with a valid BuckID have the opportunity to purchase tickets to various Columbus attractions at a discounted price. This way, students can enjoy the arts, entertainment, sporting events and experience Columbus all while sticking to a college budget.

Gift Cards:

D-Tix makes it easy for students to enjoy the tasty Columbus cuisine at an affordable price. For example, some gift cards valued at $30 are available for students to purchase for only $20. Gift cards are available through the lottery system, and winners get to choose their gift cards on a first come first serve basis each week (students may purchase up to two gift cards per semester). Please see the D-Tix website for a full list of restaurants.

General Tickets:

Each week, students are able to purchase tickets to general Columbus attractions. Tickets are two per BuckID and released on a first come first serve basis. Some attractions include Skyzone for $8, Columbus Zoo tickets for $10 and COSI tickets for $12. Other attractions, such as Cedar Point tickets and Hocking Hill Zipline Tours, are available each week through the lottery system.
