>> CAMX announces 2023 Outstanding Technical Paper Awarded to OSU and Collaborative Team

Announced September 14, 2023

Congratulations to the Delaware-Clemson-OSU-Honda collaborative team for their paper “Design optimization of a multi-material, fiber-reinforced composite-intensive body-in-white of a mid-size SUV” being selected as a CAMX 2023 Outstanding Technical Paper.

The Outstanding Technical Paper Award is presented to a technical article that has addressed critical areas of importance to the composites and advanced materials industry from business, applications, and research perspectives.

The OSU team, led by Marcelo Dapino and Leon Headings, has developed in collaboration with a Honda team led by Ryan Hahnlen, a new type of joint between carbon fiber and metal that allows for seamless fabrication of fiber-metal vehicle structures without the need to modify existing welding infrastructure. This technology is being developed by the Delaware-Clemson-OSU-Honda team to reduce the weight of a midsize SUV’s glider by 160 lbs (73 kg) at a maximum cost of $5 per lb saved. The new multimaterial glider is expected to meet all safety and performance metrics relative to the baseline structure. This project is funded by the Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office.

The award will be announced during the Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) to be held in Atlanta, Georgia in late October 2023.
