New Funding Opportunity – CCTS 2019 Pilot Research Grant

The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) is inviting applications for Pilot Research Grants which align with our 6th Annual CCTS Scientific Meeting titled, “Teaming Up on Science for a Healthier Ohio”.

The Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies Program of the CCTS is releasing this RFA specially to align with the 2017-2019 State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP), a strategic menu of priorities, outcome objectives and evidence-based strategies designed to address three of Ohio’s greatest health challenges and priority topics:

1) Mental health and addiction,

2) Chronic disease and

3) Maternal and infant health.

The CCTS invites novel proposals of pilot clinical and translational studies by multidisciplinary teams to address any of the three health priorities of Ohio. Closing Ohio’s health gaps will require comprehensive, multidisciplinary or team science approaches that may involve public- and private sector stakeholder collaboration. With the Teaming Up on Science for a Healthier Ohio Pilot Grant, the CCTS will fund meritorious scientific projects that aim to close Ohio’s troubling health gaps and ensure that every Ohioan has the same opportunity for a healthy life. Budgets up to $25,000 will be considered. All pilot projects must be completed within one year and lead to new knowledge to enhance human health and behavior, lengthen life, and reduce illness, disability and health disparities in the State of Ohio.

NEWS:

Updated HCUP Sample Design Tutorial Available

Changes to the HCUP Sample Design Tutorial recently have been implemented to account for HCUP updates. This tutorial provides an in-depth explanation of the sampling strategy for the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), the KID, and the NEDS. Specifically, the module helps users achieve three important goals:

  • Understand the sample designs for three of the HCUP nationwide databases
  • Understand how the sample designs can influence which database is best for your research
  • Avoid common errors that result from misunderstanding the sample design

The Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) is another HCUP nationwide database but is not covered in the HCUP Sample Design Tutorial. For more information on the NRD sample design, please visit the Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) Tutorial.

The HCUP Sample Design and NRD Tutorials, along with other helpful HCUP interactive courses, can be found on the HCUP Online Tutorial Series homepage.

Career development award pay lines are posted!

Robin Barr, Director, Division of Extramural Activities

I have an early holiday present for those of you who’ve been waiting for this news: NIA’s FY 2019 pay lines for our career development program are 21 for our general allocation and 28 for our Alzheimer’s allocation. These numbers mean that we will pay most general allocation career award applications to the 21 score. We may require some applicants to resubmit within that line, and we may pay one or two beyond that line. The same holds true for the 28 score—for career award applications that focus on Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. Read the full blog post.

Location: Dr. Santry’s House

Will have food, drink, and a Yankee Swap. Family are invited.

Yankee Swap Rules: Each player picks a number from a hat from one up to the total number of participants. Each person gets a crack at picking a gift according to his or her number. The person who picks the first gift opens it to show it to the rest of the company. Then the number two participant picks a gift and chooses to either unwrap it or swap it for an unwrapped gift. If the gift is swapped, the person who had their gift taken from them gets to unwrap the new gift. The game goes on until everyone has had their chance. At the end of the game, we’ll pick a number from the hat and that person will be able to choose whichever unwrapped gift they want.

NEWS:

The NIH, as part of the Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) initiative is planning to release a Funding Opportunity Announcement for clinical trials on comparative effectiveness research.   A Notice providing more information on the planned FOA was released and is available on the NIH Guide:   https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-NS-19-022.html

The planned request for applications (RFA) will support effectiveness clinical trials that propose clinical trials to test the comparative effectiveness of existing therapies or effectiveness of existing or novel approaches for prevention and management of pain while reducing risk of addiction. The overall goal is to inform clinicians about the effectiveness of interventions or management strategies that reduce opioid use that will improve functional outcomes and reduce pain across the continuum of acute to chronic pain associated with many types of diseases or conditions, or pain presenting as a disease itself.

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise in this area of clinical research to consider applying to this planned FOA. Collaborative teams combining expertise in pain management and large clinical trials will be crucial to the success of the studies.  The planned initiative will encourage UG3/UH3 phased cooperative research applications to conduct efficient, large-scale effectiveness trials to evaluate non-addictive therapies for pain that would reduce use of opioids. Awards will support a one-year milestone-driven planning phase (UG3), with transition to an implementation phase (UH3) of up to four years, contingent on meeting milestone and feasibility requirements of the planning phase. The UG3/UH3 application must be submitted as a single application.

Please refer to the contact list in the notice for inquiries

A Third Geroscience Summit on the Horizon

October 17, 2018

A Message From Felipe Sierra, Director, Division of Aging Biology (DAB)

I’m very pleased to report that only seven short years after taking our first steps in geroscience, we’re now ready to expand the reach of the field into new areas with a third Summit on Geroscience. While the concept of geroscience has been well accepted within the aging biology research community, the goal of the upcoming Summit is to extend our reach into new areas of scientific endeavor and to involve new participants, including disease advocates and policymakers.
