NEWS:

14th Annual Meeting and Scientific Session of the Surgical Outcomes Club

http://www.surgicaloutcomesclub.com/scientific-sessions

The Fourteenth Annual Meeting and Scientific Session of the Surgical Outcomes Club will be held on Sunday, October 21 in Boston, Massachusetts. 2018 Annual Meeting Agenda

Ashish Jha, MD, MPH from Harvard University will give the John R. Clarke keynote address, and the day will focus on two themes:

Health Policy: Translating Research into Policy and Policy into Action. Healthcare policy is informed by health services research and public opinion, influenced by the media and lobbyists and determined by regulatory bodies including policy makers on Capitol Hill. The journey from data to policy to implementation of new regulation is often obscure. The SOC is thrilled to welcome national leaders in Health Services Research & Policy to share their unique perspectives and experiences in taking data from patient care to policy and policy to patient care.

  • Matthew Resnick, MD, MPH, MMHC; Vanderbilt University
  • Dorry Segev, MD, PhD; Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • Melinda Buntin, PhD; Vanderbilt University
  • Justin Dimick, MD; Michigan Medicine

Implementation Science: Implementation science involves the study and application of methods to promote the uptake of evidence-based interventions into health care policy and practice.  This field has emerged over the past decade as an innovative approach allowing surgical outcome researchers to better understand barriers and facilitators to the adoption of effective surgical practices. Our three panelists will discuss how they have applied implementation science methodology to their extramurally funded health services research projects in Urology, Surgical Oncology and Trauma/Critical Care.

  • Daniel V. Makarov, MD NYU
  • Heather B. Neuman, MD, MS; University of Wisconsin
  • Elliott R. Haut, MD, PhD; Johns Hopkins Hospital

The American College of Surgeons Health Services Research Methods Course

The American College of Surgeons Health Services Research Methods Course will be offered in Chicago, IL from December 6–8, 2018.  This course is for clinical and health services researchers with varying degrees of experience in the field. In addition to didactic lectures and skills-based labs tailored to individual interests, participants will have one-on-one consultations with leading experts focused on their specific research questions. In addition to quantitative and qualitative methods, participants will become familiar with mixed methods and implementation science. Breakout sessions will focus on writing R-award and K-award proposals and securing a first faculty position. Participants will engage in active discussion of scientific and practical aspects of ongoing surgical health services research from leaders in the field.  CME is available.  For more information, see: https://www.facs.org/quality-programs/about/cqi/education/health-services-research
