Project Statement

The project, “Mask-Up” consisted of creating two physical masks connected to a pandemic. This was a partner project, and our goal was to display both the contrast and connection of man and nature. My individual goal to was to create a mask representative of the constraints of man and the freeing aspect of nature. I was able to do this through the creation of a form-fitting mask in a grayscale palette and a hint of green/nature in the back. I created a locking mechanism in the back with wire and fabric to enhance the feeling of tightness/discomfort of the wearer.

Reflection

This process of creating this project was my favorite of the year. I found myself exploring new materials, techniques, and overall getting way out of my comfort zone. I knew I wanted to use fabric to create a form-fitting mask, but I had never sewn before. Therefore, I had to learn a new skill and teach myself how to sew by hand. Although the craft of the stitching could be improved, it was a great learning opportunity. Another challenge I faced was designing a way to connect the masks together aesthetically. In order to achieve a seamless look, I actually incorporated some of the same leaves and a green fabric into my piece.
