Culture/Language Course

Class Description

While in Brazil, I learned from professors in Piracicaba who specifically taught us about the Brazilian culture, economy, history, and agricultural sector. My program also brought in a Portuguese teacher to familiarize my group and I with the language.

Class Reflection

Having the opportunity to learn the material in Brazil carried extra weight and meaning to the course. Especially concerning the Portuguese classes, it was very beneficial to form sentences and discover words and applying them to real life experiences like ordering dinner. This structure made a larger impact than it would have if my group would have been required to take it before the trip. I mostly learned how to explain who I was, what I’m interested in, common sentences, and other important words or phrases. I was then able to apply this knowledge when meeting my host weekend and living with them for an entire weekend.

The structure of the other classes consisted of multiple Brazilian professors utilizing a couple days at a time to introduce us to important information about the nation. These lectures provided an understanding to how Brazil has shaped into the country it is and what it faces in terms of the economy and climate. After all of the professors supplied us with information, we were tested on the important concepts.
