ART 4201 – New Media Art

w/ Instructor TradeMark Gunderson
The “New Media” in New Media Art often means new(ish) technologies: video, electronics, robotics, the internet. Students have just one project: to create an interactive artwork of their own concept using learned skills in programming, electronics, materials, and whatever other expertise they’ll need to turn their ideas into reality. Everybody starts with the same kit of electronics and tools. And everybody has wildly different ideas of what to make with them. (just like any style of art)

An Endless Story by Caroline Eggett

“An Endless Story” displays a website with a navigation bar to execute different tasks, along with a story displayed underneath. This piece focuses on connecting human thoughts with auto-generated suggestions to create an immersive story for others to read or listen to. The concept for this idea came from a bulletin board activity hosted in the lobby of my dorm building — each person passing by could write one word to the story. In my work, I wanted to not only include a digital footprint of this, but also a robotic footprint to forecast our increasing dependence on technology.

Bulosan’s Box by Olivia Luo

Bulosan’s Box contains a TV playing ancient human migration patterns, moving across the Earth as it spins. Passing too close to the TV will cause it to lose its signal, starting the video over again.

In Another Room by Wendy Liu

In Another Room is a simple little box that’s held up to the ear and listened to, as if you’re standing right outside of spaces like a wedding ceremony, the summer fields, or a lively beach. Once the box is opened, the music stops playing, and the connection to the “other room” disappears until the box is closed again.

FriendBot by Pen Anders

Inspired by my past comic involving an android in her last moments spent with her robot friends, FriendBot is a lost scrap of a robot seeking friendship from those around it, calling out for people to hold its hand and be its friend.
