- Tanning industry has tried to down play the risks associated with indoor tanning by releasing aggressive marketing strategies aimed at teenagers and young adults. Some of these myths include:
- Indoor tanning is safer than sun exposure
- Indoor tanning will give a base tan to protect an you from burning when outside in the sun
- Indoor tanning is a safe way obtain vitamin D for bone health and a strong immune system.(5)
Environmental
- A 2012 Study by San Diego State University public health showed that in many large cities in the US there are more tanning salons than Starbucks or McDonalds making them more convenient to their customers. Many tanning salons offer discount packages such as unlimited tanning for $19.00 per month if you sign a 12 month contract.(9)
- The Affordable Care Act initiated a 10% excise tax on tanning that took effect on July 1, 2010. The hope of the “tanning tax” is to decrease the rate of tanning bed use.(7)
