Appearance-Focused Intervention

  • Target Audience? The group being targeted in this appearance-focused skin cancer intervention primarily consists of young, adolescent girls, who are current tanning bed users. Although the study is directed at this group, it has the capacity to reach individuals outside of this demographic as well.
  • The appearance-focused skin cancer intervention is able to easily reach a large percentage of the target audience. By distributing the informational booklet in areas that are likely to be visited by the targeted group, the intervention has the capacity to affect a significant amount of current tanners.
  • In addition to being in easily accessible areas, the booklet is published at an 8th grade reading level. This is one area of the intervention that could be improved to prevent young, non-tanners from ever beginning the behavior. However, since this intervention is targeted at those who already regularly tan the reading level of the booklet is set at an acceptable level.
  • The main cost of the intervention is the 24 page booklet that needs to be printed and distributed. This low cost helps ensure that intervention can be implemented in multiple places and in large enough quantities to hit a high percentage of the targeted populations.

Parent-Focused Intervention

  • Target Audience? While most skin cancer prevention programs for young children happen at school, this particular study is designed to reach children at home.  The primary audience for this program is the parents of young adolescents, aged 9-12 years old.
  • The parent-focused skin cancer intervention is able to easily reach a large percentage of the target audience. By distributing the informational booklet to parents, children receive information not only from the handbooks but also from their immediate families.
  •  This handbook helps motivate parents to talk with their children about tanning early on so that children are made aware of the dangers of indoor tanning.
  • Each section is written in clear, simple language which allows for easier use and understanding.

Community-Wide Intervention

  • Target Audience? The target audience for community-wide multicomponent intervention is a large population in a defined geographic area (city, state, country).
  • These interventions use environmental and policy changes, media campaigns, and setting specific strategies to reach a substantial portion of relevant members in the target population.
  • The target audience for the SunSafe project was young adolescents ages 11-18.
