- It is currently estimated that approximately 30 million Americans use tanning beds with the highest prevalence found among non-Hispanic white women between the ages of 15 and 30. (1)
- The 2011 Youth Risk Behavioral Survey reported:
- 13% of all high school students reported indoor tanning
- 21% of high school girls reported indoor tanning
- 32% of girls in 12th grade reported indoor tanning
- 29% of white high school girls reported indoor tanning (7)
- Nearly half (58% of women and 40% of men) of these high school students/young adults reported that they had tanned indoors 10 or more times during the 12 month period. (7)
- The 2010 National Health Interview Survey reported that 32% of non-Hispanic white women between the ages of 18 and 21 years of age have used an indoor tanning facility at an average of 28 sessions per year. (7)
- Prevalence of indoor tanning is highest among non-hispanic white women between the ages of 18 and 21 who live in the Midwest (44%) with college age (22-25) non-hispanic white women who live the South at the next highest prevalence at 36%.(7)
- According to a CDC study published March 2014, “states with multiple youth restrictions, the odds of indoor tanning among teen girls were 42% less.(8)
