NIH Loan Repayment Program 2021
I want to encourage all postdoc and junior faculty with substantial student loan debt to apply for this cycle of the National Institute’s of Health (NIH) Loan Repayment Program (LRP). Full disclosure: I applied for the NIH LRP in November 2002 and received notice I’d received a 2-year award This year, I was awarded a 2-year award through the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program beginning August 2021.
The NIH LRPs are designed to recruit and retain biobehavioral and biomedical scientists into research careers. The LRP repays up to $100,000 of qualified education debt over a two-year period. In return, recipients commit to engage in “NIH mission-relevant research”. The goal is to decrease the burden placed on biobehavioral and biomedical scientists by escalating loan debt.
