How do Americans usually identify villains?

We are assessing Columbus from an American perspective, and thus an American definition for “villain” matters. What characteristics do they usually have, according to a common point of view? Through combining these crucial aspects with Columbus’s actions, we can now have a more comprehensive look over him.
