Writing is a key activity in college. English 3467S: Issues and Methods in Tutoring Writing presents a special opportunity to see how learning theory translates into practice, to join a unique learning community, and to become an important member of a respected campus organization. You will also increase your own writing skill and fluency and have some fun, too.
There are four important things to know about English 3467S:
- The 3467 class has an “S” attached to it for “service learning.” In this case, that means that you would spend about one unpaid hour per week in the Writer’s Studio for service-learning credit. The class trains you to do the tutoring, so no previous experience is expected.
- Most (but not all) of the students who successfully complete the class get hired to work in the Writer’s Studio in subsequent semesters, at which time your schedule can increase significantly based upon your availability. We have PWCs who work 3 hours; we have PWCs who work 25 hours—and everything in between. The job pays $12.30 per hour, one of if not the highest pay rate for student employees on Newark campus.
- Third, the class and the Studio experience look great on a résumé. Both experiences help you improve your writing and your ability to help others write better—these are key skills in many professional workplaces.
- There exists a special camaraderie among Writer’s Studio staff. There are traditions that have been handed down and regular events that have continued for nearly two decades. We’d argue that the culture of the Writer’s Studio manages to be scholarly while simultaneously whimsical.
Let us just add that some students feel reluctant to sign up because they don’t see themselves as “perfect writers.” Understand that you don’t have to be a “perfect writer” (no such thing exists). Instead, we are always on the lookout for “good writers who are good people” because those are the qualities that matter most for tutoring.
