Year in Review

Fall Fun Night: I learned that taking a break from school work is very important in managing stress. It’s quite relaxing to spend quality time with friends.

Throughout Biological Science Scholars, I have grown and expanded my acceptance of diversity in others. Bio Sci in an all inclusive group, therefore we have all learned to accept and treat others equally. I have also been exposed to many opportunities that have allowed me to utilize resources I was previously unaware. Though it’s only been a few months, I believe scholars will continue to guide all of us towards our best self.

My Journey through Scholars

Becoming part of the Scholars community was enticing to me because of my interest in biology and medicine. In autumn of 2018 a representative for the Honors & Scholars program visited my high school. Without having known what that necessarily entailed, I attended the meeting in hopes of learning more. I already knew Ohio State was right for me; I just needed a little convincing to decide on joining the Scholars community. The representative spoke about each and every one of the seventeen specialty options. I sat there as she droned on and moral of the story, all I had retained was that OSU has an unlimited amount of opportunities and Scholars would help guide me on the path to my career/interests. Up until three days before my freshman year of college, I was convinced that becoming an anesthesiologist was my destiny. There were years of thought and learning to accept that my college experience was planned to last three times as long as most others. But then it all came crashing down with one simple phrase. My father had said to me, “Look at what you define as success and work backwards to create your future.” Because of this phrase, I decided to become a business major but by being in the Biological Sciences Scholars community, I can connect my passions with my studies.

I plan to fulfill my scholars duties by studying abroad and serving in the community. I have begun this journey by looking into business study abroad opportunities as well as volunteering at events like Steps for Sarcoma.

Scholars is a program that is working to shape me into the perfect candidate for things such as internships, careers and beyond. As a first year, I have been drowning in opportunities that Mrs.Basford has compiled for our community, however, I am grateful the scholars community has been such a good fit for someone with diverse goals between my major and interests.

Career

Resume 2

After graduating from OSU, I plan to work for a company and manage their sustainability. Business is an impressionable field of work and I think this is how I can create a change. I would love to be part of a largely influential company and oversee aspects of the company that affect the environment. The planet is suffering and without my generation’s help, the damage will continue to deplete its existence until there is nothing left. Because of this I have decided to pursue a career that will better the planet. After working for a company, I plan to create my own business that is fixated on sustainability. With time, I’ll be able to better explain the details of my future career.

As an individual, I have accepted that one person cannot make the change needed to improve the health of our planet. However, an individual has the power to create a ripple effect and spread awareness about the irreversible damage done to Earth. As I grew up, my father raised us to love the ocean and that deep love has shown me what we will be missing if nothing changes. My appreciation for our planet and all of its resources will be an essential part of my career.

For the past four years I have eliminated meat from my diet. The methane cows produce accounts for twelve percent of the depletion of the ozone layer. This is equal the pollution from ALL forms of transportation (car, boat, train, plane etc). Every action has a reaction. In this case, as the ozone thins, the harmful rays of the sun beat down on the earth. In turn this is causing a climbing atmospheric temperature. As we undergo this change, the ocean loses more and more life from the rising temperatures. The very reefs I snorkeled as a kid have lost their liveliness and variety of life. In only one year a single person consumes, on average, 270.7 pounds of meat. Therefore, I have prevented 1,082.8 pounds from contributing to the ozone deterioration. But that simply isn’t enough, so I plan to contribute further by informing the public and encouraging change through my career.

Through becoming a vegetarian, I’ve learned the importance of nutrition, but more importantly I learned how to adapt. Without many food options around my town and the Columbus campus, I’ve been forced to maintain flexibility in order to sustain my body’s needs. This adaptability and flexibility has trickled into my attitude and paradigm. Now, I look at everything with an open mind and problem solving has become much easier.

About Me

Hi! I’m Maddie Mittler, an undergraduate student at the Ohio State University. I am studying business, however, I have not chosen a specialization. Moving to Columbus was a massive yet exciting step to take for someone from a small town in northeast Ohio. However, I am proud to call Columbus my new home.

As you’ll read, the ocean is my passion. However before I recognized how I could incorporate my passion into my career, I dreamt of becoming an anesthesiologist. Because I imagined a future with 14 years of schooling and plenty of hard work, I chose the Biological Science Scholars Program in order to give me the opportunities to get ahead and strengthen my skills. But then a few days before classes started, I changed into a business major and was given the option to drop out of the Bio Sci program, yet here I am. I believe that I will still benefit from being a part of the scholars community. Without even completing a full semester, I have met many wonderful people through Bio Sci and will continue to grow through the experiences offered to the community.
