Sun Safety:
- Avoid times when UV rays are highest. this is usually 10am to 4pm in the US.
- Stay in the shade when possible
- Dress babies in light weight clothing that covers their arms and legs and use a wide brimmed hat to protect face and neck.
- For older children, hats and longer sleeves are useful too, such as UPF swim wear
- Monitor your and their comfort. If you are too hot, they likely are too.
- Monitor hydration and behavior. If they seem uncomfortable or tired it is best to move inside.
- you still need protection from UV rays on overcast days
Sunscreen
Under 6 months :
- It is best to keep babies under 6 months old out of direct sunlight using clothing or shade.
- To create shade when out and about try bringing an umbrella with you.
- If this is not possible, a small amount of SPF 30 sunscreen is okay on hands, cheeks or other exposed areas
What to look for in sunscreen:
- Broad spectrum coverage (this blocks UVA and UVB rays)
- SPF great than 30
- Water resistant
- ingredients like Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide- these are mineral sunscreens often preferred for younger children because they sit on the skin and are not absorbed, however a non-mineral sunscreen is better than no sunscreen at all
General tips:
- Apply 15 minutes before going outside
- Reapply every 2 hours (or as stated on packaging)
- Don’t forget ears, exposed scalp and tops of feet
- Sunscreen may leave a white sheen that cannot be rubbed all the way in- that is okay
