Online Webcast Teaches Physicians About Tick Borne Diseases. Contrary to popular belief, ticks actually cannot fly. They generally lie in wait clinging to trees and grasses, until they detect a potential host through their breath, body odor, body heat, moisture or vibrations. Then they grasp onto the host as it passes by. Once they grab onto a host, a tick will remain in place until it is completely engorged. They can consume 200-600x their body weight in blood. Ticks are found across the globe but generally they prefer warm, humid environments. Due in part to global warming, tick populations are spreading to new areas and tick-borne diseases in Humans are increasing.
So here to discuss the most common Tick-borne infection, Lyme disease is Dr Josh Watson. Josh is an Internal Medicine & Pediatrics physician specializing in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Nationwide Childrens Hospital.
