In the Hilltop area in Columbus, Ohio there is a main street called West Broad street. Along this street there is a side with shopping centers and a side with a neighborhood and homes. The safety of the people is put at risk when it comes to getting food by walking or riding a bike. There are no bike lanes for people riding bikes and there are not enough sidewalks. Sidewalks were only placed in certain areas there are bus stops that leave people in areas that are just grass for them to walk through. The lights for pedestrians to cross are set up along Broad Street although there are not enough sidewalks the light that show the pedestrians when to walk provide safety. The traffic in the area is not high, but there are many accidents that occur in the intersection of Wilson Road and Broad Street.

In this neighborhood families access healthy food by walking, riding bikes, driving, or taking the bus. Across Broad Street are three grocery stores that allow them to buy healthy meals. The grocery stores are Sunrise Asian American Market, Kroger, and Save A Lot. These grocery stores can be walking distance and are the easiest to access in this area, other grocery stores like Meijer and Walmart are driving distance and the people have to use automobiles to get there. There are difficulties walking to grocery stores due to how big the parking lots are.

In this area there are three grocery stores that the people can walk or drive to along the 7 blocks. Although there are three grocery stores, one of the three stores are a small grocery stores that does not have as many healthy food options. There used to be a Target next to Kroger, but it got shut down and was turned into a warehouse. For this area it would not be considered food secure or food insecure because Save A Lot does not have as many healthy options as the regular grocery store and the Asian market has more Asian meals and foods different countries.

Along Broad Street, is a food swamp. The residents in the hilltop can obtain junk food and fast foods with no problem. There are Asian food places, there is a McDonald’s, a Burger King, a White Castle all along the same street that are walking distance from the people and it is a quick drive to get fast foods. Fast food in the hilltop is extremely easy to acquire compared to food places that contain healthy foods. There are also food trucks where people buy their fast food from that could also be considered part of the food swamp.

For this neighborhood to allow safety for pedestrians a bike riders sidewalks and bike lanes shout be implemented. They should have a way to walk without the worries of getting hit my a car or stepping in mud. Supermarkets could be added in the neighborhood or places like save a lot could extend their building to add more healthy food like a bigger produce aisle. Food that harms should not be more accessible than foods that help the body. People are encourage to go out and buy junk food and fast food more than they are encouraged to eat healthy and this should change. Healthy foods should be viewed as something that tastes good and helps you. Place like dollar general should include healthy meals and not as much junk food in there aisle. It is hard for people to buy healthy meals because of how costly it can be even though it is better for their body. Healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle needs to be encouraged more and people should have easy access to it.

For this assignment I walked around Westgate park and the neighborhood surrounding it. This is a park in the hilltops of Columbus, Ohio.

Sidewalks: There were sidewalks that went around the entire park. The width of the sidewalk differed as you went around the park. As you got closer to the recreation center the width of the sidewalk increased. Although the park contained sidewalks the neighborhoods surrounding the park did not have sidewalks. For better safety it would be beneficial to incorporate sidewalks in the neighborhood and for COVID safety it would be better if the some of the park sidewalks are widened.

Traffic Flow: On the street around the park the is a two way traffic where vehicles can travel in both directions. In the neighborhoods surrounding the park some streets at two way streets while others are one way streets. the speed limit in the neighborhood is 25 mile per hour, while the speed limit at the park is 35 miles per hour. this speed limit seems reasonable due to how open the road is at the park and since there are always people at the park. traffic flow could be improved by making lanes one way lanes instead of two way lanes in the neighborhood.

Street Width: In the neighbor surrounding the park the one ways have a good street width that allows for parking on the side of the street, but the two way lanes are approximately the same width as the one way lanes  and they also contain cars that  park  on  the  side  of  the  street.  The  cars  going  through  the  two  way  street  then  have  to  take turns  passing  each  other. It  would  be  better  if  the  two  way  streets  where  wider  in  the  neighborhood,  but  the  one  way  streets  are  good  in  width  along  with  the  street  surrounding  the  park.

Street safety: Streets do not appear very pedestrian friendly due to the lack of sidewalks in the neighborhood. Since there are not many sidewalks, there are not many crosswalks for people to cross safely from the neighborhood to the park or the park to the neighborhood. Along with there being no crosswalks, there are also not signs to beware of pedestrians crossing since there are no sidewalks. Bikers also have to share the street with vehicles because there are no bike lanes. To improve street safety bike lanes should be added around the park for the safety of bikers and crosswalks and sidewalks should be added in the neighborhood.

Parking: There does appear to be sufficient parking both at the park and in the neighborhood. The park contains two parking lots that have multiple parking spaces. Throughout the neighborhood the houses have driveways and there is enough space on the street for people to park on the side of the street too. I would implement lines that differentiate parking from the driving so that the cars driving past the parked cars stay in their lane and do not hit the parked cars and people make sure that their car is parked in the lane so their car does not get hit.

1. INTRODUCTION: The name of my city is Rih Town it is a city that is full of life people get to go out and enjoy the city. It is also a working progress towards making the city greener with clean water and wind power.

2. BACKGROUND: Starting my city there were issues with water flow and electricity, the water was not pumping throughout the city so people would end up leaving the city. Now the water is pumping throughout the whole city and the population is growing each day.We also have many people gaining an education and many people working.

3. POPULATION:The city has went from a population that wouldn’t grow any higher than 250 citizens to a city of over 5,000 citizens. It has grown to be a more attractive city to the people than when it was first created. The demographics are increasing and heading in a positive direction. Households of multiple people are increasing throughout the city and jobs are no longer struggling to acquire workers.

4. BUILT ENVIRONMENT:

Minimize pollution with use of power plants and lower energy consumption throughout the city.

strength- lowers chances of clim

ate change occurring

weakness- It takes multiple windmills to produce enough energy for the whole city, so it will cost more money.

opportunity- there are many areas around the city where the wind power will be greater to produce more energy.

threat- some structures were built on areas that have good wind power.

Windmills will be placed in areas where wind blows the hardest and there will be one power plant located in the city. The percentage of electricity use will also be lowered.

5. HOUSING:

My goal is to separate commercial residential and industrial zones throughout the city, so the citizens live nowhere near pollution of the industrial zones.

strength- lowers the amount of citizens getting sick from the pollution

weakness- citizen will have to travel longer distances to get to work

opportunity-land can be expanded to make changes

threat- some structures will need to be torn down to be put in a different location

New land will be purchased and the different zoned will be separated. Some structures may need to get destroyed to show a separation.

6. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:

My goal is to invest more money into developing the city with more homes and tourists attractions the will make the citizens more satisfied.

Strength- Attractiveness of city will increase and tourists will help bring in money along with the citizens who work

weakness- creation of new structure take away nature

opportunity- new land is available for the city to grow

threat- rise in pollution from tourists

A new plot of land will be bought were more attractions can be created and new homes can be placed.

7. TRANSPORTATION:

My goal is to input more bus systems to transport people around the city.

Strength- lowers the amount of pollution from cars and can hold multiple people

weakness- buses stop consistently, which makes it take longer to get to the destination

opportunity- bus systems can be places in commercial residential or industrial areas

threat- Citizen may not use the bus system because it takes longer to get to the location

With the money gained through taxes bus stations will be placed in multiple locations in the city.

8. COMMUNITY SERVICES AND UTILITIES:

My goal is to place more healthcare throughout the city so everyone has access.

Strength- Citizen are less likely to get sick

weakness- hospitals only reach a certain area of citizens

opportunity- citizens get sick by noise pollution and will need healthcare

threat- spread of illness in healthcare.

I will place healthcare on the north and south areas of the city so that it reaches all of the citizens.

9. PARKS AND RECREATION:

My goal is to make the city more desirable for tourists by putting in more attractions like amusement parks.

Strength- amusement parks allure tourist to the city

weakness- citizen leave work to visit the attractions

opportunity- the city is near water

threat- water pipes were set up on the water and sewage goes into the water

New land will be purchased that is also connected to the water in order to place an amusement park there.

10. NATURAL ENVIRONMENT:

My goal is to create more roads with grass

Strength- reduces noise pollution

weakness- costs more than regular roads

opportunity- roads can get upgraded

threat- roads already created will need to get destroyed

In order to achieve this goal I will update roads that a close to industrial areas and commercial or residential areas. This will reduce the outcome of citizens getting sick.

11. FUTURE LAND USE PLAN:

My plan is to purchase a plot of land in order to extend the city and grow the population.

Strength- more structures can be created on this new land

weakness-The more citizens, the harder it will be to care for all of them

opportunity- land is available on all sides of the city

threat- Land may not have good soil for a developing city

I will buy a new land and connect roads to the old land and create new zones.

12. IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY: By buying a new plot of land I will be able to create new structures, places attractions, and grow the cities population. Throughout the city there will be a reduction in pollution with the use of windmills and buses. Healthcare will be put in opposite locations for better access. Changes will be made all throughout the city in order for the city to grow and be a city that reduces chances of global warming.

SIMULATION VERSUS REALITY:

This plan leaves out the development of a city that was already created. With Professor Burton’s video she was helping to develop a city that was already created. With the help of citizens they are helping better their town. There is not voting of the citizens to adopt the plan in this simulation. “To a great degree the effectiveness of the plan depends on the degree of the commitment by the municipal government and the citizens to the plan” (Levy 131). The incorporation of citizens is needed in comprehensive plans. With the simulation the peoples need are taken into account but they do not come up with the plan with the government.

Introduction

Hello and welcome to my blog!

My name is Aleysha Martinez-Guerrero and I was born in Akron, Ohio (I don’t know much about it though because we moved when is was 5). I am a second year and I’m undecided on my major, I was planning on going for architecture. I’m taking this class because its a course similar to architecture, I applied to the architecture major and didn’t get in, so I’m going to reapply in the spring and get my GPA up. This major would be my next option because it has a lot to offer and I feel like I could use it to help others and come up with new ideas to make a city better.

My favorite city that I’ve been too would be Daytona, Florida. Not only is it my favorite because I went to the beach there, but I also enjoyed viewing the houses nearby the beach. The house were beautiful vibrant colors. Colors you don’t really see on houses in Ohio and if you did that house was probably one of the few in that neighborhood. the houses in Florida reminded me of the houses you see in south and central america. My family is from Honduras and when I went to visit my grandmothers house was pink, but it was normal. It was nice seeing the different houses in Florida and I definitely enjoyed the warmer weather.
