  1. Post-trip/Reflection blog posted to u.osu.edu/london2020, final post trip blog, (public) reflection upon your London experience, 200 words minimum, post to post trip category for credit with a title that is not “final blog post/blog, etc.” but something more specific and creative
  2. Post-trip/Reflection statement submitted to Carmen, minimum one page typed thoughtful (and private only for instructors to read) Personal Reflection Statement of your experiences in London. Thoughts for consideration:Elaborate how was this trip meaningful for you.Consider how you learned about British culture through these travels.

    Explain how it expanded you personally, intellectually, socially.

    Describe what were your favorite projects and or experiences.

    Elaborate how the trip surprised you in a way you were not expecting.

Below are assignments due in London:

4 Posts deadlines 6am Tues 10 Mar, 6am Thurs 12 Mar, 6 am Sat 14 Mar,  and 9.30 am Sun 15 Mar

4 in country blog posts for complete credit: all correctly categorized, titled, with choice of 2 A or B and 2 C or D (students can always do more than minimum and if you would like to do all C or D, talk with Aimee)

A: 200 word post, any response you like (ideas for prompts below) with minimum 3 pictures total with captions in any of the posts OR

B: sketch post with minimum one clear sketch labeled with a caption and 100 word description of your goals, analysis, interpretations of the sketch

AND (choice of 2 minimum between C and D below)

C. a vlog (video blog) post, details to be confirmed but with a minimum word or time requirement (comparable to 200 words). Let us know if you are interested, we would like to explore this idea using the potential of the iPad. Vlog does not have to be of your face, could be an interview/discussion or flipping through your sketchbook showing what/how you are working to understand/represent the sites. Talk with Jeff/Troy/Aimee if interested-

D. 100 word response posts to any other classmate’s post.   These are in an effort to have a conversation within the blog, not just output of content

Post prompts if interested (not required):

  • Visiting your museum of choice: analyze the organization of the museum, what/how were objects/collections organized, analyze the museum’s context in the city
  • Your thoughts on visiting sites such as Barbican, St. Paul’s, Museum of London, our extended exploration day of Southbank/Greenwich/Olympic areas, or any other content completed in our first couple days.
  • What do you think about the (many) cultural items at (British for example) museums removed from their original context and how they are presented in the museum setting?

reminder, if you have a 5×8 sketchbook, a sketch means a double page layout. Otherwise if you have a 8×10 sketchbook, sketch is only one page

Sun 3.08.20  Full double page layout for 8×10 or 4 page payout for 5x 8 sketchbooks, your experience and perceptions along the path we experienced this day (layout of your idea for experiential map is fine for now)

Mon 3.09.20 British Museum, one sketch great court, one sketch of a museum object (if you didn’t get the object sketch, you can makeup on your free afternoon for a museum of your selection

Tues 3.10.20 one sketch Stonehenge

Wed 3.11.20 two sketches Westminster Abbey (one westworks facade, one other), one sketch for afternoon activities (museum/site of choice)

Thurs 3.12.20 one sketch Kew Gardens

Fri 3.13.20 no sketches required on Free day, makeup or optional/extra sketches possible for bonus (day openers are bonus as well)

Sat 3.14.20 Hotel analysis/diagram assignment, complete one from A and one from B, extras possible if extra sketches are needed

A hotel lobby section including street, entry, lobby stairs, elevator lobby and salon outside of breakfast and hotel lobby (section jogs are possible). Add labels denoting what each space is and rough space of furniture OR

Plan of whole hotel with entries & contextual relationships

B shading sketch concrete surface, min 5 rows full page, half for big sketchbook OR

Plan of your room including furniture, bathroom, window, hallway outside of entry door. Add dimensions (length of foot is fine) roughly giving idea of proportions. Furniture should be rough, not detailed.

Due Mar 6 before flight to London: Pre-departure blog, a public version of what you are excited about regarding London trip, 200 words minimum, post to pre-departure category for credit

Due Mon Mar 2: readings and videos to watch, see readings tab, 5798 SP20 Exam2 due at end of class, 5798 SP20 2.27 in class activity due at beginning of class, GeoBlue insurance card either printed or on phone (Aimee forgot to check last week) and Personal Expectation statement below

Personal expectation statement, 1 page minimum typed (1″ margins all sides, 11 point font with only 1 line at top for name/title of assignment), SINGLE SPACED thoughtful description of your personal expectations and goals you want to achieve from this study abroad experience. Please reflect upon your priorities before writing as we will review these carefully so that we can best help you to achieve your goals. This statement can be related to excitement regarding particular sites (and tell us why), what you are considering for your free day or other aspects of the travelling experience, or as it relates to sketching, culture, experiences, etc. Also, if you have any concerns regarding this trip, feel free to articulate them as well so we can be sensitive to your needs during this experience (these will only be shared with Troy and Aimee).

Due Fri Feb 28: drop off sketchbooks in my 297 KN office lightwell by Fri 1 pm for review (or upload to Box if sketching digitally)

Due Thurs Feb 27: Experiential map due

Columbus way finding map due, full double page layout, or 4 page layout taped together for smaller sketchbooks. An experiential path (one you are currently experiencing in Columbus or area, not a past or hypothetical path), annotated with modes of transportation, important locations (buildings, landscapes, urban markers, etc.) and your thoughts/impressions of that path helping others to understand what you experience on that route

Due Mon Feb 24:

1. Proof (printed or on a device/app you will have daily out in London) of GeoBlue insurance card

2. consider 3 expectations you expect of the larger group, Aimee will ask you to write them down in class on Mon Feb 24 and compile them as an agreement of group decorum

Thurs Feb 6 in class assignment:

Plan, section, and elevation of chair in Knowlton Library (or other notably designed chair in the building). Note the name of chair, designer and year chair was designed, from this link.  Remember line conventions, darkest line is material being cut through in a plan and section. This is a full page sketch in large sketchbook, 2 pages in smaller sketchbook.

Due Thurs Jan 30, in sketchbook in class: 

Minimum 1″ high and 8″ long (for each), practice 2 shading scales in your sketchbook, one in pen, one in pencil. Shading in equal increments (meaning 50% should be about in the middle of the page) from  0% – 100% shading equally along the scale. Consider care in line quality in this assignments gaining more points and careful practice. Write the name and width/softness/hardness of tool used for each scale. Welcome to practice more than minimum 2 shading scales if desired.
