About

This is the site for our podcast, “Keys to Understanding the Middle East.” We are the Middle East Studies Center at Ohio State University. The purpose of the podcast is to build a community of experts and novices who are passionate about studying the Middle East. We specialize in current research and established academic knowledge of the region’s peoples, geographies, histories, and cultures while staying relevant to its importance in the world today. The information will unlock many of the common terms and ideas you hear in news about the Middle East and help you to break down the headlines. Our own motivation comes from a need to stay in touch with our colleagues; it helps us keep up with what is going on at Ohio State with regard to the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia. We also hope to reach students who are seeking information on Ohio State’s in-house experts, the courses they offer, library materials, opportunities to experience the Middle East, and so on.

We do a live recording every other Wednesday at 10am ET.  The way it works is we do a Facebook live stream. Then we take the recording, make a podcast, and post the video to the podcast’s Youtube channel. You can find the podcast on most major podcast platforms.

The podcast is brought o you by the Middle East Studies Cener. The Middle East Studies Center (MESC) is an area studies center of the Office of International Affairs and was established in 1981. Since then, the Center has brought in over 13 million dollars to the university, forged lasting partnerships, and strengthened OSU’s reach in the local community and beyond. This means the creation of easy-to-digest materials, such as our e-book, and our personal delivery of content to schools in Columbus, across the country, and online. We conduct extensive training for the military, provide ongoing media analysis (delivering 50 media interviews per year), and continually work to strengthen Middle East studies at OSU by supporting courses, enrichment activities, library resources, and experiential learning opportunities for students.

Please support our Center’s Outreach Program with a donation. Every dollar directly funds work to make university expertise and resources available and accessible to the general public.  If you are interested in a visit to your school or have any other questions, please get in contact with us at mesc.osu.edu/contact
